That Canada lives under the wings of the USA is an urban myth and one
that I am glad you brought up, allowing me to debunk it.

Mario responds:

Roland,

Baseless assertions, unfounded in fact, do not debunk anything. Everyone knows
that Canada depends on the USA even for those who want to live and but are
trapped in health care waiting lines.

Here is a list of your incredible assertions, with my comments interspersed,
followed by some real examples of American altruism:

1. Pierre Trudeau a francophone, firmly established the independence of Canada
in the comity of nations and made it respected, strong and a byword for
fairness.

MG Comment: You must be kidding. Perhaps you haven't been there long enough
to know that your head of state is an aging while lady from Britain.

2 a. As far as defence goes, until the follies of the post Jean Chretien
administrations of fighting the Afghan war as a proxy of the United
States, Canada was never on any terrorist shortlist.

2b. There will never be any threat to Canada from other nations because of
its geographical isolation and its policies.

MG Comment: Why would any terrorist bother about a country that is happy to
allow them free reign to terrorize anyone they want around the world?

3. The USA pushed NAFTA down Canada's throat and in the name of
preferential trade, made it a branch plant of the United States. In
the name of buying our lumber and our oil, the US emasculates us.

MG Comment: Doesn't this contradict your previous assertion of not-so-fierce
sovereignty and independence? BTW, how does a buyer emasculate a willing
supplier of goods and services?

4. but who says that we cannot export to the rest of the world what we now
export solely to the United States? Who says we should not form strategic trade
alliances with Europe, Asia and South America?

MG Comment: The fact that you haven't done so.

5. Poof, Mario we are under no body's wing. We don't need the USA - they
need us. If only our short-sighted politicians could see that.

MG Comment: So, let me see, a) Canada pays obeisance to an aging white British
lady as their head of state, b) no self-respecting terrorist bothers about
Canada because Canada does not object to what they do, and c) the US has
"emasculated" Canada and "forced" NAFTA down its throat, even though it is a
brave, sovereign and independent country that doesn't need NAFTA but signed it
anyway.

I think you have my case for me, better than I could.

Oh, regarding American altruism, beyond the voluntary expenditure of lives and
treasure in the epic liberation of 50 million Muslims from Muslim tyrants,
being first on the scene to rescue Indonesians after the tsunami, helping
mostly-Muslim Kosovo and Albania become and maintain Independence in the face
of opposition by the feckless Europeans, face down the entire world to provide
India with the ability to be self-sufficient in nuclear electric power, here is
a little tidbit that you may not have been made aware of in the fiercely
anti-liberation-for-others Canadian media, with the exception of
