This is reworded post, as my earlier one didn't make it to Goanet possibly
because I quoted from Maurice's private email.

Freeda being brought up in Bombay, naturally has exposure to Goan Cusine and
may have meant to say 'sorpotel' is her favourite. That does mean to say it is
the case of the rest of the Mangaloreans. Secondly 'sorpotel' is not
copyrighted dish by Goans. Thirdly you seem to be quite aware of the
'Bhende-Kodi',' this is the usual slang, in addition to 'mango' you used ticked
me off.

It seems obvious you did not hear Freida on the Jay Leno show. What you think
she "means" is different from what she actually said. Check it out, please.
What is "copyrighted" dish? Sorpotel is a Goan dish that many other communities
may be cooking now. It does not take away the fact
it is as Goan as "Bende-Koddi" with sugtan is Mangalorean. Goans also now cook
this Mangalorean dish and, by the way, a big favourite of mine. At the recent
Dubai family fest I bought a plate of rice and the dish from the Treats
Restaurant stall. Bhedde-Kokdi it is not "usual slang" as you "mean". I have
never heard any non-Goan say to a Goan you are "sorpotel" as I have never heard
any non-Mangalorean call a Mangalorean "bendde-kodi". These ethnic dishes
identify the community in a manner of sorts. They are not racial slurs. In the
same way calling a child of mixed Mangalorean father and a Goan mother a
"mango" is NOT a racial slur. To call Goans "Maka Pao" by non-Goans in Mumbai
is considered a degradatory or offensive term, just as non-Maharashtrians
calling Maharashtrians "ghantis". Calling Mangloreans "Mangis" is NOT a
degradatory term, but in fact a shortened version. Unfortunately, there is no
short version for Goans.
Calling a child from a union of Portuguese father and Goan mother a "mistis" is
NOT a racial slur, just as calling a child of British or even European father
and an Indian mother an "Anglo". These terms, mistis and anglo, are used to
narrow down the identification of the person.
In Canada, the term "paki" used against South Asians is a racial slur. It
carries a negative connotation. Using "black" is accepted by people of African
origin, that includes people from the Caribbean, but not "nigger", which is
considered a degradatory term. Calling a Jew a Jew is not a racial slur but
when calling someone other than a Jew a Jew is a racial slur because it carries
a negative connotation of being a "miser." Similarly, calling a "bania" a
"bania" is not a racial slur but calling a non-bania bania is a racial slur.
If I remember correctly some Mangaloerns and Goans in Toronto came together
many years ago to start an organization called MANGO Association.
You getting "ticked off" does not bother me, nor does it bother me when you say
that you know who I am. I have said to you in an earlier post, you should grow
up "intellectually" whereas I am growing up physically.
On my part, this is my last post on the sorry episode of "sorpotel" and
"bendde-koddi" mix-up.
