Subject: [Goanet] An interview with John Fernandes - as published in
the Gomantak Times (goa) today
It's indeed very sad, that Nazism has spread it's wings in Goa as well.
Just yesterday I read an article that was forwarded to by Mario, it's an article
that made a lot of sense, it was written by none other than our very own Mr.
Averthanus L. D'Souza, this article is full of wisdom, and I am sure like me a
lot of others who read it must have shaken their heads in affirmation and said
to themselves Oh yes, very true !!!
In his article Mr. D'souza has quoted Gandhiji in a very positive and
enlightening way, and that, Gandhiji's predictions have infact come true at this
point in time. I have chosen this part of D'souza's article to bring forth the
monstrosity of destruction caused by our greed. He links the ideologies of
Mahatma Gandhi and Ernest Schumacher and says:
"The signs that our industrial economy was not sustainable was evident to
several wise men, most prominent among whom were Mahatma Gandhi and Ernest
Schumacher. In his epoch making book "Small is Beautiful" written in 1973,
Schumacher outlined his economics "as if people mattered." He was following in
the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi who was convinced that all production activity
should be for the benefit of Man. His saying that "there are enough resources to
meet everyone's need, but not enough to satisfy everyone's greed" is often
quoted loosely without a proper understanding of the underlying philosophy.
Gandhi and Schumacher distinguished between misery, sufficiency and surfeit.
According to them, no individual should suffer deprivation of the most basic
necessities of life. On the other hand, they both asserted, a surfeit of
commodities would result in economic disaster. Schumacher argued that economic
growth would be good only to the point of sufficiency. Limitless growth would be
disastrous. How true their understanding has proven to be!
The economics of Gandhi and Schumacher was based on the use only of renewable
resources. The world has been rudely awakened to this realization only now
because of the economic meltdown which it is facing. Humankind has been reckless
in its "exploitation" of the earth's resources. We have been wasteful of the
resources which have been given to us by God for our sustenance. What is staring
us in the face is a catastrophe of unprecedented proportions. Our pride has
blinded us to the consequences of our actions. We have chosen to ignore the
truth that men are not the masters of the universe; but that Man has been placed
in a position of stewardship over the bountiful resources of Nature. Good
stewardship requires that we use our resources prudently and sparingly.
Profligacy is not only an individual sin, it is also a social sin. And social
sin has its inevitable consequences as we are witnessing today."
We certainly need to reflect and take account of what's happening around us, and
try to preserve what's left of, what "Natures generosity" bestowed on US, the
catastrophe that's predicted is not a fantasy, it's the TRUTH staring right at
us, if not round the corner.
Our mining elite have shut their eyes of the TRUTH and are wearing the designer
"glares" coated with the fallacy of development, for wealth accumulation at the
cost of a holocaustic ecological disaster. And those who have seen the TRUTH and
leading the agitation to SAVE the environment, like John, Seby, Venita and the
rest, are made precision targets using the very Government machinery that is
supposed to protect it's people.
What can we expect from our "Amdars and Montris" along with our Men in uniform,
who have been bought by the moneybags and are being used to harass and
intimidate the people who have taken up the "gauntlet" for Goa and Goans.
Seby has been slapped with a defamation suite, John has been slapped with
attempted murder, Venita was dragged out of the Gramsabha, an 80 year old woman
and her young grandchild put behind bars, peaceful agitators in Qupem and Colamb
attacked by the men in uniform, looks like Nazism is certainly flourishing in
Goa, and if we do not do something about it, it's surely going to lead US to the
"Ghettos"
Men's greed has is certainly insatiable, and how true are the words of wisdom of
the great Mahatma "there are enough resources to meet everyone's need, but not
enough to satisfy everyone's greed".
Greed and gluttony are sins against Men and Nature, please support Seby and John
in their fight for Men and Nature
