PANAJI: Goa's Congress legislator Agnelo Fernandes and 200 others were arrested
on Monday after they defied orders and took out a march towards the
Republic Day parade ground in the city, demanding removal of a ship that ran
aground eight years ago.
They were protesting under banner of 'River Princess Hatao Manch', demanding
removal of a huge cargo ship which ran aground in North Goa's Candolim shore in
June 2000.
"Fernandes was arrested under 151 of CrPC as they had no permission to hold a
march in the city," Sub Divisional Magistrate Sabhaji Shetye told reporters.
The protesters were arrested to avoid possible problems during the parade.
River Princess Hatao Manch, an NGO, has been agitating in the state demanding
removal of the ship which could cause ecological disaster due to high erosion
of sand.
The protesters were arrested at Panaji's Ferry Wharf, almost 2 km away from the
Republic Day function venue, when they were walking with placards in hand. The
function was attended by governor SS Sidhu, chief minister Digamber Kamat and
other dignitaries.
Fernandes said that they had no intention to sabotage the parade. "We would
have sat peacefully at the parade with placards in hand. This was a peaceful
silent protest," the legislator representing Calangute constituency said.
