Selling a lie, on the floor of the House ?
                                                 By:- Wilmix Wilson Mazarello

This is what people say, of the Chief Minister of Goa, on his assurance to the
Legislative Assembly, on the Roman Script issue, during the last session of the
Goa
Legislative Assembly.

The "Romi Lipi Action Front", took a random survey of Goa, in January 2009
with a
question to the "common man" in the streets. The question asked was :

The Chief Minister of Goa , Mr Digamber Kamat, gave an assurance to the
Legislative
Assembly during the last Goa Assembly session, that he would soon call a
meeting of
all the interested parties, along with his Government Representatives, to
discuss an
amendment to the Official Language Act of Goa, and settle the problem once and
for
all, to the satisfaction of all. Till date, that meeting has not been called.
What
do you have to say to that ?

Margao:-
He is a liar. He is playing politics with issues that are very sensitive to
Goans.

Panjim :-
He has taken the sanctity of the House so very lightly.
The C. M is making a mockery of the Legislative Assembly.
The Roman Script is an issue for Goans, and he has to settle it.
He cannot shun his responsibility.

Vasco:-
He has no wish to settle the Roman Script issue .
"Birds of a feather flock together" is most applicable to him and his likes.
He and his government should be taken to the "Human Rights Commission".

Mapusa:-
The Congress has no "will" to settle the issue. It is not Digamber Kamat alone,
it
is the whole Congress, which has made a "mess' of the Roman Script issue.
I hope the opposition pulls them up in the forthcoming Assembly Session.

This survey, was taken in all the 11 Talukas of Goa. The opinion expressed by
the
common man, is almost the same as shown above in the above 4 Cities.
Some were very aggressive and abusive in their remarks, against the Chief
Minister
and the Congress. Hence those remarks, cannot be reproduced here.

I ,as a Convenor of the "Romi Lipi Action Front" have no option , but to agree
to
the common man in the streets.
How can I not agree when it is a"fact" that the Chief Minister, did nothing on
his
assurance, for full six months?
It is becoming clear, day by day, that the Chief Minister is also playing a
political game with an issue, so sensitive as the "Roman Script".

It only shows how much influence, the 3% Devnagari Script fanatics are having
on the
Chief Minister.
It is now to be seen, as to how far the C.M will go to please the Devnagari
fanatics.

Will he go to the extent of displeasing an entire community and risking even
the
Margao Constituency ?
Well, it may be worth waiting and watching, how things unfold, from now on.

If the C.M. wanted a little more time for creating a political consensus on the
issue, he could have sent a positive signal for now, by appointing a Roman
Script
user as the President of the Goa Konkani Akademi.
But no, he did nothing of that sort.
It only exposed , his line of thinking.

I'd like to further add here, "How can you expect a Chief Minister, who cannot
give
us the post of a President in the G.K.A, to give us an "amendment" to the
"Official
Language Act'?

Let it be known here, to everyone that it was the prerogative of the C.M to
appoint
the President of the G.K.A.
He did not have to take anyone's permission.
Moreover, many Institutions working for the Roman Script, had sent
representations ,
much in advance , requesting the C.M to appoint a Roman Script User, as the
next
President of the Goa Konkani Akademi.
He paid no heed to all these institutions.

It is possible that after reading this article the C.M may now call a
"face-saving"
meeting, but it will be just a 'face-saving' one.
Nothing more than that.
He stands exposed , being hand-in-gloves with the enemies of Roman Script. &
hence with the enemies of Konkani.
The 'Roman Lipi Action Front" will now take the "issue" and the C.M., to the
people.
To the same common man in the streets.
Let the 'common man' decide.
