Adding to the Ripley's unbelievable yet true AXN programme, here is an incident that marked the power of supporting democracy during the three day carnival in a astute village of Goa, proving democracy means one's own private property.
When the people of Cananguinim are facing the rough weather with Show Cause Notices by the High Court. through the local Panchayat, and are in troubled water with the CRZ and RPG 2021, the M.L.A. of Quepem had arranged 'khel tiatr' to entertain the locals. People are frustrated and tormented that their houses may be demolished and the land be forsaken through RPG 2021. But the politicians instead of showing concern for the people, they try to provide entertainment during Carnaval! The locals rightfully asked the khel tiatr actors to turn around and walk back, the local Sarpanch Mrs Willune D' Silva then welcomes the khel tiatrists to perform in her own house. The locals said, 'the M.L.A. did not showed his face for more than fifteen months, now he has arranged entertainment for us, which we do not need. He has entertained us enough by not caring for the locals and imposing on the panchayat and the people against their wishes the food park and industrial estate and what we need right now is not a khel tiatr but the rejection of the Food Park programme and to give back the acquired land by the GIDC to the rightful owners. The locals are spending sleepless nights and are in fear of the demolition order issued by the Panchayat. They feel that the Panchayat has cheated them. Almost all of them own the sketch plan, various receipts and approval by the Panchayat for the construction of their houses after 1991. However, they lack support from the Panchayat which does not support the locals but the politicians. The locals had asked to include their agenda for the special gram sabha meeting which was refused. The secretary explanation was 'since this is a special gram sabha, we are not including such agendas'. His own agenda is to tot up more powers to the Panchayat Secretary which is strongly opposed by the locals. The locals are in fury and are waiting for the Gram Saba which will be held on Sunday 1st March in the village area to raise these issues and sort them in a democratic manner. The locals who have received the Show Cause notice for CRZ, those house are within 200 and 500 meters from the High Tide Line need to reply in the determined days.
