I have been following this business of 'The Cidade Ordinance' somewhat shocked. Neither The Indian Express, Pune, nor The Hindustan Times, Mumbai, have it on their scanner yet and that makes it much worse. On the net though, there is a lot happening and lots of wrath building. For the first time perhaps in years, goans on the ground and even those outside closely following developments, are beginning to make connections between the various neportisms at work. All eventually traced back to the 40 thieves and their 'industrialist' friends...
Alex Siqueira, looking as if butter would not melt in his mouth, intoned to a news channel how it was unthinkable that the Goa government would ignore an order from the highest court in the land. So what happened Alex? The same law firm hassling Seby made your colleagues change their minds? It is the Goa Foundation that won the important ruling that exposed the Fomento plans to privatise a public beach. I have seen neither Claude nor Norma post on Goanet, although I am wondering if some of Fred's influence and charm could get them to post a 'current status' sort of report, with the future courses of action planned. I strongly feel this would give the rest of us a chance to put our energies behind them, and ensure that the goons don't get away with this. What next, two mining leases activated on the Bambolim plateau? Bauxit deposits around Old Goa? Iron ore in Altinho? I must say that Down to Earth moves very fast. Thank you for wanting to do a piece on the 'Cidade Ordinance'. I have copied my mail to you to several well-known persons with the request that they give you their contact numbers in Goa. They are drawn from a wide spectrum and although not actively working with one another, are united in the belief that Goa's naturally rich environment if not 'lifestyle' is seriously under threat. I have never raised this with Sunita, but I must tell you that not many in Goa are happy that Down to Earth has Fomento advertising its wares on its shiny cover. I live in Pune and will be no help to you on the ground. Please call me should you require any additional information.
