Arun Ferreira: Another Naxal? And if he is a Naxal, is there a reason? Are such appelatives the new consensus building exercises among the middle classes. Also I am sure that politicians get security briefings, and are very aware of those who are with/for the masses. Or is a system hell bent on destroyin those who helps the underdog. One would never know, considering all the noise that PR folk make on behalf of the corporates, and the love that they all seem to have for Gandhi, ji or otherwise. And teh State looks at it as National Security. Would we have even heard this phrase if not for the Americans coining it. Could we not even come up with our own? So when one somewhere is accused of being a Naxal (whether true or false); does it lead to the appelative rolling much more easily off of the tongues (as in Goa)?
So we have Arun Ferreira the Naxal, Seby Rodrigues the Naxal, Vernon Gonsalves(of Mangalore, ex-AICUF) the Naxal, etc.; do we yet have a Sister Inferior the Naxal, or lil' Shakuntala the Naxal and lil' Moinuddin the Naxal? But are Christians that special in the India of today? Should we not brush up and create more appropriate appelatives and exonymns for the power brokers, at least in our minds? Could we have say, X the Zhovnaro, Y the Balatgari, Z the Bamto. I can be kinder, but sometimes its hard. Btw, when Vernon was picked up--a book by Maya Angelou was seen as incriminating evidence. (excerpt) *The search is on... (del), two officers from the Nagpur police visited Jennifer’s residence in Thane. Jennifer is in Ahmedabad, but they spoke to her uncle Rudolf. The police found 24 books on Sociology, a few books on social work, a CD on the life of revolutionaries and some documents * http://www.daijiworld.com/news/news_disp.asp?n_id=33575&n_tit=Arun+Ferreira%3A+A+Naxal%3A+say+police%2C+a+Loving+Dad%3A+say+in-laws%2C+a+Social+worker%3A+say+Neighbours +++++++++++++ (( FROM A BLOG )) HC dismisses Naxal's torture plea (Arun Ferreira's [alias Sanjay Choudhary] case) http://naxalrevolution.blogspot.com/2007/08/hc-dismisses-naxals-torture-pleaarun.html If true, imagine that his wife cannot even meet him. Why is it that we (as in the system) cannot separate things. Whatever he is accused of, why do we mix things up--to the extent that as AF alleges--his wife cannot visit him on threat of being ARRESTED. And the lawyer implicated?! (excerpt) He alleged that he was threatened by the police personnel that if his wife Jennifer, who is believed to be a Maoist sympathiser, would be arrested if she comes to Nagpur and his counsel Surendra Gadling would be implicated for defending naxals. +++++++++++++ Speaking out against wrong actions is both a right and a duty by Sandya Srinivasan (excerpt) At one level, there’s nothing special about the arrests of Binayak Sen and Arun Ferreira, nothing that merits special concern. It is no secret that hundreds of people are arrested in this country every week; that thousands are beaten up in police stations; that people are shot dead in “encounters”. All this is known and even accepted. Over the years we have seen a public “consensus”-building exercise to justify, even approve, torture in custody (“How else will we extract important information from hardened criminals?”) and “encounter killings” (“If we don’t kill them they’ll just pay their way out and commit more crimes.”). “Encounter specialists” like Daya Nayak become media darlings. Middle class Indians feel no sympathy for people like Binayak Sen and Arun Ferreira. http://infochangeindia.org/200706065545/Human-Rights/Analysis/Speaking-out-against-wrong-actions-is-both-a-right-and-a-duty.html +++++++++++++ Release Arun Ferreira, Ashok Reddy (Murali), Dhanendra Bhurle and Naresh Bansod http://www.petitiononline.com/relarunf/petition.html (excerpt) The families of the detainees have also been submitted to repeated interrogations and house searches which is clearly a form of unwarranted harassment. We, the undersigned therefore appeal to you to: 1. Immediately release Arun Ferreira, Ashok Reddy, Dhanendra Bhurle and Naresh Bansod and withdraw the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 2004 imposed on them. 2. Withdraw the use of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 2004 which has been repeatedly misused to illegitimately detain innocent persons. 3. Order an inquiry into the widespread use of narco-analysis and other forms of torture, stop the use of narco-analysis and take suitable action against those police officers responsible for the use of torture on detainees. 4. Stop the unwarranted harassment of the families of the detainees. +++++++++++++ venantius j pinto
