With the global economy in dire straits, the Indian economy is in chaos as well. In the midst of all this 714 million voters of the world’s largest democracy are set to elect 543 representatives to the 15th Lok Sabha. The elections scheduled this summer is estimated to cost a staggering Rs 10, 000 crore.
To tide over the current economic melt down it would have been prudent instead to have a purposeful consensus national government, over the next five years, with a broad understanding between leaders of all recognized political parties. This may be in the larger national interests to confront the basic realities and redress the dire needs of the of the poor and under-privileged masses. Another, if not a better option, is a stint of military rule which may also do our nation some enormous good. Aires Rodrigues Ribandar
