GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) TALEIGAO POLLS TODAY HERALD REPORTER Cash-flow rumours flood Panjim police station PANJIM, MARCH 21 Rumour mills that money was being freely distributed to woo voters worked overtime in Taleigao on Saturday ahead of the village panchayat polls, even as the Panjim Town Police Station received many calls in this regard from several wards. Elections would be held for the 10 wards to the Taleigao VP on Sunday (March 22). One candidate from ward No 1 has been declared elected unopposed, leaving over 20 candidates to fight it out for the remaining wards. PI Nolasco Raposo said he had received calls that money was being distributed to woo voters. Around 60 personnel were deployed on patrolling and booth duties, he mentioned and added, “Two of our jeeps patrolled several wards continuously in the afternoon.” Raposo said today some supporters of Agnel Silveira, who has floated a panel, met election authorities and alleged that money was being distributed by supporters of Babush Monserrate, whose panel is tipped to win heavily. While the Babush panel (Taleigao Democratic Front) seems to be the sure winner, the MLA’s wife, Jennifer Monserrate, would find the going tough for her in Ward 6 where she is pitted against Mira Pereira (Save Taleigao Democratic Front), who is known to have a sizeable clout in the Dona Paula area. But Babush seems to be unstoppable after holding sway over the Panjim city corporation elections in which his candidates won unopposed and were placed as Mayoress and Deputy Mayor. Taleigao, which at one time abounded in agriculture is gradually losing out to building constructions a lot many of which have been attributed to the local MLA by his detractors. Vito Gomes, a prominent Gaunkar of the village, said Taleigao was the rice granary for this region of Goa. It is slowly being converted into a concrete jungle, which has been encroaching onto the fields and other green areas, he stated. A total of 14,098 voters would exercise their franchise giving them a chance to choose candidates who would work with their interests in mind. 8,013 of these voters are male and 7,746 females.
