Santos Passos – At Margao with Pics & Video Today, Sunday the 29th March 2009, we went to Margao Holy Spirit Church to attend ‘Pass’ ‘Santos Passos’ is commonly known as ‘pass’ (A Konkani word for Rain where it is said either pass or Paus). Procession with life size statue of Jesus Christ carrying crucifix, His mother (Our Lady of Seven sorrows), singing of Veronica are the main scenes of ‘Santos Passos’ ‘Pass’ is observed on different dates at various churches. commonly on Sundays On this day, as a tradition, every household prepare a sweet dish called ‘dall’ or ‘Goddxem’ sort of thick gravy like sweet eatable made up of ground rice/coconut paste, jagary, gram-dal or pieces of sweet potatoes or whole wheat grains. Santos Passos symbolizes the Holy Journey of Jesus Christ to Calvary where He was taken there to be crucified. Mother Mary or Our Lady of Seven Sorrows shown joining in the procession after meeting Her son Jesus. Sadly, this Holy journey is not observed in all churches due to some caste based rivalry. Today, it is also observed at our place Agassaim where Veronica is sung at the traditional place ‘Chinchekode’ on NH17. Procession starts from the Church and then proceeds towards Pilar, at Malwara and then comes back to the church. It takes about 1 hour on NH17. However, we have seen police diverting the traffic on the kacha or dusty incomplete bypass road.
