CRYcket Festival - Gladiators & Invincibles clinch Trophies The Friends of CRY Club (FOCC) hosted the CRYcket 2008 on 27th March 09, for children in the Under 12 & Under 14 categories at the Ahmadi grounds, with the kind support of Kuwait Oil Company and the Hockey Committee. The event was a roaring success on all acounts and attended by a large crowd who watched 25 keenly contested games. The first two attempts to hold the tournament in November 08 and Jan 09 were washed out by heavy rains. But this did not dampen the spirit & participation of any of the contestants. Kids corner, essay and painting competitions, Buy for CRY stall, raffle & bingo and other games for children conducted by youngsters themselves kept the spirits of the spectators high. The tournament was sponsored by Payal Jewellers, New English Optics, DNV Classification, Oriental Restaurants and Fantasy World provided gifts for the various competitions, as in the past several years. In the Under 12 category Gladiators Juniors , Riggae Cricket Club and Spartan Juniors teams qualified to the Super league. The first Super League match between Gladiators Juniors & Spartans Juniors started with Spartans winning the toss and electing to field. Superb Batting by Rohan Shaju (21 not out), Shagun Chauhan (11 runs) & Siddarth Dash (11 runs) gave Gladiators a comfortable 70 runs in 7 overs. In reply Spartans were all out for 40 runs in 6.4 overs, Sandeep Dutta being the top scorer with 17 runs. All the Gladiators bowlers were equally successful. Rishab of Gladiators emerged as the only bowler bagging a hat trick. In the second Super league match between Riggae CC and Spartans, Spartans won the toss and elected to Bat. Though they lost wickets initially, their middle order batsmen Saif Nadeem (19 not out) & Khalid Abdul (11 runs) took them to a total of 53 runs in 7 overs . Allen Tom was the pick of the bowlers for Riggae conceding just 5 runs in 2 overs clinching 3 wickets. Riggae in reply took the required 54 runs in just 5.5 overs. Hani Hamza top scored for them with 15 runs. In the third Super league match between Riggae CC & Gladiators, Riggae won the toss and elected to bat. Their scorecard read 47 runs from 7 overs. Hani Hamza again top scored with 21 not out. Rishab spearheaded the Gladiator bowling attack conceding just 6 runs in 1 over clinching 2 wickets. Gladiators reached the target in 6.1 overs with Shagun Chauhan giving a solid start retiring at 20 assisted by Aswin Gupta (10 runs). Gladiators clinched the CRYcket Trophy for Under 12 Category winning both super league matches. Riggae CC secured the second place. Rohan Shaju of Gladiators Juniors was adjudged Best Under 12 Player In the Under 14 category Abuhalifa Knight Riders , Invincibles, Flawless and Gladiatiors Seniors teams to semifinals. In the first semifinals between Abuhalifa Knight Riders & Gladiators Seniors, the toss was won by Gladiators who elected to bat first. Tight bowling by Abuhalifa KR restricted Gladiators to a total of 32 runs in 7 overs. Gladiators fought back with a determined bowling attack making it a finger biting match. Sensible batting from the Abuhalifa Batsmen, Bhargav Cheprolou (13 runs) and Vinaya Khandelwal (10 not out) assured them victory with four balls to spare. In the second semifinals between Invincibles and Flawless, the toss was won by Flawless who elected to bat first. Flawless was restricted to a total of 37 runs from 7 overs by a very disciplined bowling and fielding performance. David Mathew took 1 wicket from 2 overs conceding just 5 runs. Sanjeet Singh (18 retired) gave a head start to Invincibles. Rohan Paul (10 not out) and David Mathew (10 runs) ensured the victory with two overs to spare. Faizan Ali was the best performer for Flawless scoring 14 runs. He conceded a mere 9 runs in 2 overs claiming 1 wicket. In the much awaited finals between Abuhalifa Knight Riders and Invincibles, Invincibles won the toss and elected to field first. Soumendra Kumar gave a solid start to Abuhalifa retiring at 20 which took them to a comfortable 34 in 4 overs with 8 wickets in hand. Comprehending the impending danger, the invincible bowlers rose to the occasion. They conceded just 7 runs in the last three overs claiming 6 wickets that changed the entire scenario. Sanjeet Singh spearheaded the bowling attack giving away just 6 runs in two overs. He was well supported by Rohan Paul and David Mathew. Abuhalifa did well to get back into the match. By restricting Invincibles to a mere 20 runs, they left the match evenly poised at the end of four overs. Soumendra Kumar topped the bowling for Abuhalifa giving away just 6 runs in two overs. With nine wickets in hand the Invincibles seemed to be in a slightly better position. Sensible batting for second wicket (32runs) between Bharath Ganesh (15 not out) and David Mathew (20 not out) lead them to victory. True to their name, Invincibles clinched the coveted CRYcket Trophy in the Under 14 category with Abu Halifa Knight Riders securing second place. Sanjeet Singh Sahni was adjudged the best Under 14 player. FOCC is a group of volunteers supporting CRY who organize cricket andchess tournaments for children on an annual basis. In addition they also conduct Brain Bang classes for accelerated learning. Pawan Chaudry, the chief coordinator in his short speech congratulated the winners and the participating teams and highlighted the importance of Child Rights & You (CRY) to the youngsters. FOCC members distributed the trophies to the winners, runners-up and the best player awards. Medals & certificates from CRY were awarded to each participating child, manager and coach of each team. In recognition of their efforts and support to CRY, match officials and volunteers were awarded with certificates. Throughout the tournament, snacks and delicacies were served by Udayam Restaurant. The function concluded with the vote of thanks by event management team convener, Shoukhat Ali. FOCC once again gratefully acknowledge the support of Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) and the Hockey Committee for providing the facilities to conduct the tournament as in the past years.
