GOANS: The first significant numbers of Goan migrants came to Bombay
in 1822, liberal partisans fleeing political persecution in the
Portuguese colony for the safety of British India. As the century
progressed, Goan emigration to Bombay swelled. The Portuguese hadn't
been especially attentive to developing industries, so the pressure on
cultivable land was intense
