Matanhy Saldanha: Saga of struggles: “Ask not what the nation can do for you
but what you can do for the nation,” said the iconic John F. Kennedy. This
advice from the thoroughbred capitalist has been the life of Matanhy Saldanha
who has always thought of the State of Goa first, even above his own interest.
For nearly 40 years now – since the time he completed his studies – Matanhy has
been fighting to preserve Goa and the Goan identity in all its vistas. Whether
it is the environment, topography, culture or lifestyle of Goa and Goans,
Matanhy has sought to preserve and protect it so that Goa remains the Rome of
the East and Kashi of the West.
His life is truly a chronicle of Goa’s evolution into a vibrant State where the
concerns and aspirations of the masses at large are respected and honoured. In
fact, it would not be far from the truth if one says that it is because of
Matanhy and the various people who stood by him at different moments that Goa
is what it is today.
Today as he completes 60 years of his existence it is befitting that the people
at large know of his contribution to society so that in present times, when
frustration is writ large, there can be new role models.
Knowing Matanhy, this attempt to chronicle his life, will be just a beginning,
as now that he is retiring from his teaching profession, he will have more time
and that would mean, he will be involved in more struggles. Thus, the saga of
struggles will continue…
Born on the 24th of October 1948, Matanhy did his schooling through Guardian
Angel High School and St Thomas High School Cansaulim. His college years were
spent at Christ College in Bangalore and in Belgaum, where he completed his
B.Sc in Zoology and Geology. Later he obtained his degree in Education (B.Ed)
from Annamalai University
.
Matanhy began his career as a teacher at Don Bosco High School, Panjim where he
taught from 1974 till date. While a teacher Matanhy obtained his post
graduation degree in Political Science through Bombay University. Always eager
to enrich himself with knowledge, Matanhy did short courses in Journalism and
in Public Administration.
He was the general secretary of AICUF, North West India in 1973, General
Secretary of Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott from 1975, Founder Chairperson of
the National Fishworkers Forum from 1978, was a Zilla Panchayat member of the
Cortalim Constituency (2000-2002) and a MLA of the Cortalim Constituency
(2002-2007). He was the Minister of Tourism in the Manohar Parrikar led
Government.
In 1988, he was awarded the “5 Outstanding Young Persons” award by the Jaycees
of Goa and later in the year he was awarded at the all India level, the award
for Distinguished Service rendered to the Nation by Jaycees. Matanhy has
traveled widely within India and worldwide to attend seminars and conferences
on various issues related to the welfare of the people and conservation of the
ecology and the environment.
