GOACAN welcomes the swift action by the Dy. Collector, Margao, Mr. M.V. Khorjuenkar and the Director of Mines and Geology – Mr. Arvind Lolienkar in putting a stop to the public nuisance created by laterite stone quarrying at Pateapur Nuvem. GOACAN now calls upon the concerned Government Departments to prepare a comprehensive Action Plan to monitor licences issued for South Goa District so as to avoid environmental degradation and ensure the safety and security of residents of the local area. It may be noted that a woman resident Mrs. Francisca Fernandes from Pateapur in Nuvem had filed a complaint with the Mamlatdar of Salcete Taluka and Dy. Collector Margao about the public nuisance created by quarrying of laterite stones and had called for a site inspection and necessary action as per the law of the land. The complaint further pointed out to the noise pollution caused by the use of modified mechanized plougher for 12 hours daily, deep pits created without any safety barricades and the non-display of a board stating the details of licences granted. On receipt of the copy of the complaint GOACAN had organised a Fact finding visit by the women volunteers of the various Consumer Forums to the site to examine the extent of Public nuisance, the impact on the environment and the infrastructure in the area and the violations of the Goa Minor Mineral Concession Rules 2000 that may have arisen. On completion of the visit GOACAN petitioned the concerned authorities to take urgent and appropriate action in the matter. GOACAN also made a representation to the Principal Chief Engineer, Mr. A. M. Wachasunder, PWD and to Mr. R. Mihir Vardhan, Collector South and Chairman of the District Consumer Protection Council to take steps to protect the PWD Water pipe line supplying Selaulim Water to Mormugao Taluka which was likely to be damaged due to the laterite stone quarrying. The Nuvem Civic and Consumer Forum also made representations to the Dept of Mines and Geology, Dept. of Science, Technology and Environment, Goa Sate Pollution Control Board, Town and Country Department, Directorate of Mines Safety, Dy. Collector Margao and the Mamlatdar of Salcete Taluka requesting their intervention to stop the public nuisance caused by quarrying of laterite stones in Nuvem. ------------------------------------------------------------ GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK ----------------------------------------------------------- promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa ----------------------------------------------------------- GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mailto: [email protected] ---------------------------------------------------------- __._,_.___
