Meticulous investigations by Ponda police led Mahanand Naik (40) of Tarvale-Shiroda to confess to the murders of Yogita Naik in January and Darshan Tukaram Naik in 1994. Narrating the detailed sequence of events, Ponda SDPO DySP Serafin Dias stated that Pramod Kushali Naik of Nagzer Curti, Ponda, had lodged a complaint on January 14, stating that his sister, Yogita (30) had gone missing after attending a function at Bazarmol-Ponda. During investigations, Ponda police learnt that a person using the mobile number 9011921862 had been in contact with Yogita on her mobile number 9823042309 since January 6 till the time she went missing. Police then found out that the mobile number 9011921862 has been registered in the name of one Rohan Kirlapalkar of Sanguem. Rohan admitted that the cell number 9011921862 was registered in his name, but stated that he had lost his mobile phone with the cell phone number 9011921862, while travelling from Savordem to Ponda sometime during June-July 2008. Further enquiries revealed that the mobile number 9011921862 was used on four different mobile phones. “Collected call details of users of numbers of all four mobile phones were registered to Rohan R Kirlapalkar of Sanguem, Mahanand Naik of Tarvale- Shiroda, Kalpesh Velinkar of Mardol and a woman from Shiroda,” said DySP Dias. During enquiries, the woman informed police that she has the SIM card and that the same SIM card had also been used by Mahanand Naik of Shiroda. The woman further complained that since the last four years, Mahanand had blackmailed her and had sex with her under duress, after threatening to kill her and to expose her semi-nude pictures, which were with him. In this connection, a complaint was recorded and Mahanand Naik was arrested under Section 376 IPC for rape. “During interrogation, Mahanand admitted that he had come in contact with Yogita Naik at an STD booth at Upper Bazar, Ponda in the first week of January. He befriended her and they began exchanging calls on their mobile phones between January 6 and January 10,” said DySP Dias. Commenting on the mobile number 9011921862, which was registered to Rohan Kirlpalkar, Mahanand admitted that he had found a mobile phone at the Kadamba bus plying from Sanvordem to Ponda and had used the phone number to call Yogita and others. When asked to explain his whereabouts on the day Yogita went missing, Mahanand said he had phoned Yogita at about 9.30 am and met her in the market, before returning to his house at Tarvalem-Shiroda. “Police investigations, however, revealed that Mahanand was using the phone number 9011921862 within the tower located at Borim and Kajiwada, Ponda. The other SIM card, (9823041309) which belonged to Yogita, was also used by Mahanand on January 10 within the tower located at open plot, Sanquelim road,” DySP Dias added. Faced with statements that contradicted facts, Mahanand admitted that he met Yogita at Ponda on January 10 and had planned to take Yogita out in order to rob her gold ornaments and to kill her. “Accordingly, Mahanand took Yogita to an isolated cashew plantation at Morlem-Sanquelim, where he removed her clothes, leaving her in her innerwear, under the pretext of having sex,” DySP Dias said. “Mahanand then grabbed Yogita’s dupatta and strangulated her. When he was sure that she was dead, he removed all her gold ornaments, which included a gold chain, four gold bangles, silver anklets, gold finger ring and pair of golden earrings.” He also took away her clothes to make it difficult to identify her and disappeared from the spot with her cell phone. He then went to Bicholim and sold gold ornaments at a jewelry shop at Bicholim, police said. During the enquiry, Mahanand agreed to disclose the place of offence. He took the police team to the cashew plantation at Morlem -Sanquelim and showed the spot where he had murdered Yogita. Ponda police contacted its counterparts at Valpoi and confirmed that a highly decomposed body had been found on January 15. The deceased had been found in undergarments and was in her late-twenties. Based on the investigations, Ponda police registered a cased against Mahanand under Sections 392 (robbery), 302 (murder), 201 (Causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) IPC. During interrogation, Mahanand stunned police by disclosing that he had murdered another woman from Shiroda in a similar fashion in 1994. According to police, Mahanand had taken Darshan Tukaram Naik (22) to an isolated spot at Bambolim on a similar pretext in 1994 and had murdered her. Agassaim police later confirmed that a dead body had been recovered at Bambolim in suspicious circumstances and the case had been unsolved since then. The case was meticulously investigated by PI C L Patil, PSI Sanjay Dalvi and a Ponda police team, under the supervision of Ponda SDPO DySP Serafin Dias and North Goa SP Tony Fernandes. ------------------------------------------ HERALD 26/4/09 page 01 ---------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK ----------------------------------------------------------- promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa ----------------------------------------------------------- GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mailto: [email protected] ----------------------------------------------------------
