When reporters visited the residence of Mahanand’s third victim, Kesar Raghu Naik (33), at Mapa-Panchawadi, locals raised doubts over the mysterious disappearance of another villager, Surat, in 2006. They recalled that Surat had left her house well attired, wearing gold ornaments, and had taken cash with her, after someone had promised to marry her. She was never seen after that and a missing complaint had been lodged with the Shiroda police outpost. The fact that Mahanand’s earlier four victims wore gold ornaments and that they went missing after being lured with false promises of marriages has led locals to strongly suspect that Mahanand may also be involved in the disappearance of Surat. Meanwhile, Kesar’s mother was heartbroken when she was conveyed the news that her daughter had been murdered by someone who had pledged to marry her. Speaking to reporters, Kesar’s sister, Leela, said they had fervently hoped that Kesar was alive. “Though we suspected something fishy we allowed ourselves to believe that Kesar may have married him and they may have gone to an undisclosed place. We never expected that she would have been murdered,” said Leela. The lower middle class family struggles to make ends meet and two sisters are unmarried, while two brothers are unemployed. -------------------------------------- HERALD 05/5/09 page 3 -------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------- GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK ---------------------------------------------------------- promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa ---------------------------------------------------------- GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mailto: [email protected] ----------------------------------------------------------
