My dear Floriano, I do understand that GU is used by different individuals for different purposes. Most Goan students, I am led to believe, attend GU, study hard and become 1st class professionals. The ones who pass through this side of the world, have thus far, been absolutely brilliant.
Now, I know that you will tell be (correctly) that Goa has for centuries produced (in no particular order) brilliant professors, engineers, musicians, chefs, seamen, doctors, lawyers et al; and that this is nothing new. That is true ....but it is possible that some among us do not know that as a fact....Goans from Goa have held top positions all over the world ....over the past couple hundred years ( at least). Now, as expected, internal politics is present in every academic institution. It is like TVs 'animal kingdom' among the faculty. And in Goa, there is partisan politics where politicians interfere in the 'internals' of the teaching institutions. (BTW: from what I understand - this political interference is a relatively new i.e. post 1965 phenomenon in Goa). As far as students are concerned: Most attend to better their future, some go there to party. And no prizes for understanding this: There are some 'bombs'. This happens all over the world. Ragging is a post 1970 'bhaillo' phenomenon in Goa, and it should be firmly put down. It will continue to destroy the lives of many young future contributors to Goan society. At the same time, one has to understand the following (I suggest): 1: Many young students (especially females) suffer silently. 2: Some accuse wrongly. (e.g. Goa Engineering College) 3: It is best to know the facts i.e. All the facts. Then let the chips fall where they have to. This is best achieved by having independent proceedings. 4: Unfortunately, in this case, the politicians and possible political hacks have been involved. As expected, the waters have been muddied. Despite all the good intentions in the world, just like a snake bites - a politician is a politician, and a political hack is exactly that. 5: I distinctly recollect the unfortunate harm done to the Goa Engineering College boys by (what I now have come to understand was) a bogus allegation of gang rape. Who pays (or can pay) for that? 6: I distinctly remember (in a generally related matter), the Ribandar priest (whatever else he may or may not have done or be doing) been tried and found guilty on GoaNet by another political hack. 7: We have to be careful with what we do to others and their lives, for: a: There are some serial abusers and b: There are some false accusers and c: There are opportunistic organisms who will use any event to their advantage. just my view jc BTW: You mean to say that GU cannot find a Goan V-C ....yet? 2009/5/6 goasuraj <[email protected]> 1: our dear Goa University is a hot-bed of political wheelings and dealings and not a 'temple of learning' as it should be. 2: this sexual harrassment thing which has culminated from the 'ragging' thing 3: there are really very worthy 'bad elements' involved in the ragging ( as well as deliberate class-room disturbances) case 4: if he is involved in this sexual harrassment case. 5: But the verdict must come from a highly unbiased, reliable and accepted morally upright sources
