*HI Friend, this is for your reading pleasure and to TAKE A STAND FOR
SAFETY.*

*As appeared in today's Herald Newspaper.*

*MAKA KITEAK PODLAM !!! *

“Maka kiteak Podlam! Most of the Goans know this sentence and use it well
only to escape from any responsibility in life. But this sentence has been
playing a major destructive role in today’s life of our society at large.

The day today jetset life has consumed the family values and eroded Goan
cultural bonds that once existed. The neighborhood which reverberated with
fun and frolic has disappeared from the scene. The immediate neighbor has
been looked down with wide suspicion instead of being treated as the best
friend in need.

The recent burglaries across Goa have thundered the conscience of every niz
goemcar as to what is happening to our neighborhood. Who is responsible for
these daring burglaries? What tempts the burglars to strike at will in
bright daylight? What are the solutions to prevent these burglaries? Why the
government has failed to protect the Goans’ homes and life? Or is it just
another case of MAKA KITEAK PODLAM attitude?

We all know that the government cannot and will not be able to protect Goan
homes from these onslaughts of burglaries however strong police force it may
possess at its disposal. Having witnessed the surge of migrants in every
village due to the construction boom, there has been steady mismatch between
the neighbors and migrants who have outwitted each other in running some
business. The migrants have managed to do business of running kiosks,
handcarts and even door to door sales. At any given time, one will find
number of salesman roaming the streets of villages, and who knows if they
use this modus operandi to survery the areas and fix their target. The
mobiles have become very handy to carry out their trade to precision. .

Very often we find ourselves in an embarrassing situation whenever the Goan
families fight amongst themselves or even between the two neighbors. And we,
as neighbors keep ourselves aloof saying, MAKA KITEAK PODLAM? And this very
attitude has taken a beating today, giving an opportunity to the outsiders
to take advantage of the situation. The discord amongst Goans today speaks
volumes. In reality, before or after the fights, we should find out the way
to settle any dispute amicably, be it family matters or general problems or
guide the family to sort out amongst themselves their ill feelings and live
in harmony, setting an exemplary life to all other communities. Am I asking
for too much? It may sound irrelevant but given a try it will surely
inculcate a great sense of security, for the family as well as for the
village.

So, I feel it is the responsibility of every Goan to come together at
village level and chalk out the strategy how to manage the safety be it day
or night time. First and foremost each neighborhood has to co-operate and
collectively implement the planned strategy to keep the burglars at bay.
With the help of the village panchayat, the protection force could be
nurtured and engaged to keep a strict vigil in the village, instead of some
employing outsiders as watchmen who are now looked down upon with suspicion
for all the latest burgalaries in Goa. Most of the security agencies are
functioning in Goa with mostly non goan recruits. If Goan villages take
themselves into this trade it could in turn give an opportunity for self
employment at every village level. Isn’t it a great idea to be implemented
before it is too late?”

Nagoa,
