While such reports make for often noticed, sensational reading, one
has to be wary before believing the same.

The "urban legends" page says, in a similar context:

"It is critical to maintain the disctinction between what is fact and
what is folklore because, while it's accurate to say there is a grain
of truth to the legends, it is simply false to assert that the recent
incidents "prove them true." The perpetrators of the recent crimes
were copycats, merely imitating the same stories we've all already
heard (as a matter of fact, tall tales about HIV exposures culminating
in the punchline "Welcome to the world of AIDS" date back at least 10
years)."
