6.10 feature // India's triumphant Congress prepares for government
India's Congress party has begun the task of forming a government after steering its ruling alliance to a second term in office with a resounding win over the opposition BJP-led alliance. Senior Congress leaders have met in the Indian capital to formulate strategy and to choose which parties it might approach for securing a parliamentary majority. The Congress alliance has fallen just a whisker short of the required 272 seat majority. With all results counted, India's election commission said the Congress alliance has won 261 seats, with the party's individual tally at 206 -- its best performance since 1991. The BJP-led grouping has bagged a mere 159 seats. The results have also been a major setback for leftist parties, which withdrew support to the government last year over the Indo-US nuclear agreement. 938Live's Tamal Mukherjee speaks to public affairs analyst Rajiv Desai in New Delhi, to know more about the huge victory by the ruling party. ------------------ "Click the link to listen to an interview of Mr. Rajiv Desai with Radio Singapore." http://938live.sg/portal/site/938Live/menuitem.c7c021e8625f45358ace28101e100 0a0/?vgnextoid=d33ac550d4978110VgnVCM1000001f0aa8c0RCRD <http://938live.sg/portal/site/938Live/menuitem.c7c021e8625f45358ace28101e10 00a0/?vgnextoid=d33ac550d4978110VgnVCM1000001f0aa8c0RCRD&vgnextfmt=1> &vgnextfmt=1
