BICHOLIM, MAY 20 A 40-year-old man from Dhave-Sattari was seriously injured after he was attacked by a leopard on Tuesday at about 10.30 pm. According to reports, one Uday Devgo Mandrekar from Dhangarwado had cultivated some vegetables in the field, which was some distance from his residence. Uday had built a small house in the field, where he along with his family used to reside, especially to look after the farm at night against wild boars and other wild animals. On Tuesday night, Uday heard some cries from hens and dogs in the field. Thinking that some wild animal might have strayed into the field, he went out to check. On reaching the field, he found that his dog was being attacked by a leopard. In an attempt to save the dog from the leopard, Uday focused the high beam of his torch on the leopard. This infuriated the leopard and the animal then pounced on Uday. He fell on the ground, as the leopard began to attack Uday. In a desperate bid to wriggle out from the clutched of the leopard, Uday caught hold of leopard’s neck and pushed the wild animal. The leopard ran away, but not before inflicting serious injuries on him. Uday was rushed to Valpoi Primary Health Centre, where he was treated for multiple injuries. Uday was later referred to GMC Hospital in Bambolim. After treatment in GMC, Uday returned to the Valpoi PHC, where he is said to be recuperating. Speaking to Herald, Animal Rescue Squad Chief Amrut Singh said that his squad members were informed about the presence of leopard in the area. “Uday’s own dog was taken away by the leopard some two months ago, besides inquiries revealed that several animals have been missing in the area,” said Singh. “We do not suggest the forest department to lay a trap, but create awareness among the public not to kill animals on which these leopards prey,” he added. Later, the forest officials visited the area and took stock of the situation.
