Quote Faria Strikers Football Club, a First Division football team, set to make its debut in the Goa First Division League later in November-December is being coached by South African Mr. Wally Walker. Mr. Wally Walker has a wealth of coaching expertise primarily at the youth development level as he was associated with the academies for youth development in Cape Town, South Africa prior to taking up the coaching offer for Faria Strikers. Mr. Walker says he enjoys building a team and working with the players towards making them a successful unit. “That’s precisely the reason I came to Goa and took up the assignment as I wanted to involve myself with a team that aims to move up the ladder,” Mr. Wally said as he prepares to test his wards in the first season of football in Goa at the First Division League. “The aim is to win the First Division League this season and then take it up from there as the target is to enter the Indian League – the top most tier for professional clubs in Indian football,” the former Manchester United footballer of the 50s said. Having started his coaching career with Germiston Callies, after seeking retirement as a player at 51, the affable Wally Walker wants the players to enjoy what they have been told to do on a football field. “That’s the reason I never shout at them (players). I let them enjoy and allow them to give their best,” the man who believes in keeping things simple on the field but yet gets the best out of the players, added. Mr. Wally Walker’s brush with Italian football during his playing days has compelled him to propagate their coaching philosophy and also adopt the same principals of coaching in Goa. He says, Italians are not like the English, who teach “attacking football”. On the contrary, Italian coaching epitomises football itself. “Football is a thinking game and in Italy they teach you to think football,” Mr. Wally reminds. “Everything is done with the ball in Italy. And when a player is more on the ball he is less prone to injuries and also earns respect from the players. Make players run around more or they tend to get bored and that’s the time they lose interest, which is dangerous. Therefore it’s a mind thing. Make them play with the ball more and they start enjoying. It’s simple; they do more with the ball than without it. That’s the Italian way,” Wally explained.
