PANAJI: Leader of the Opposition and Panaji MLA Manohar Parrikar underwent a
successful angioplasty at the Apollo Victor hospital at Margao on Tuesday. "He
had
been experiencing chest pain since the last three days, but dismissed it as
acidity," Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Govind Parvatkar told TOI.

At around 5am on Tuesday, Parrikar is believed to have experienced chest pain
once
again and called up a friend and told him about his problem. "He was reluctant
to go
to the doctor, thinking that the pain was acidity, but his friend Sanjay
Valaulikar
compelled him to see a Panaji-based practitioner," Parvatkar said.

The doctor subsequently referred the Panaji MLA to the Apollo Victor hospital
in
Margao, where he was admitted and underwent surgery.

"By 12 noon, the operation was complete. The Opposition leader has been shifted
to
the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital. The North Goa MP Sripad Naik and
myself visited him this afternoon, and he was his normal self," the BJP
spokesperson
said.

The 55-year-old MLA has had no previous medical record of this condition,
members of
the BJP said.

Incidentally, angioplasty is the technique of mechanically widening a narrowed
or
obstructed blood vessel.

A press release issued by the Margao-based hospital stated, "He (Parrikar)
underwent
emergency coronary angiography followed by a successful emergency angioplasty.
He is
expected to be in the ICCU for the next two to three days. Subsequently, he
will be
under observation for a total period of approximately one week and is expected
to
return to his normal lifestyle gradually over a period of 2 to 4 weeks."
