World Busk Day to Support Goa Charity

14 May: Bridport News (UK) … Internationally renowned violinist David Juritz
set up the charity Musequality in 2007. To raise money for the charity’s next
project, a music centre for homeless children in Goa, he came up with the idea
of a World Busk. On Saturday, June 14, at noon, local time musicians around the
globe will take to the streets to raise funds for Musequality and hopefully
gain a coveted world record… For more details visit www.worldbusk.org or
alternatively www.musequality.org Contact David Juritz [email protected] or

Musequality World Busk: An invitation to join this event to change young lives
in Goa :

Monday, 8th June to Sunday, 14th June 2009

Dear Friends of Goa,

We would like to invite you to take part in a first ever worldwide musical
event that will raise money to change young lives in Goa.
We hope many people in the World Alliance of Goans, wherever they are in the
world, will join with us to make this event a huge
success.

Are you a musician? Then please accept our invitation to get involved. Do you
know any musicians? Perhaps you could invite them
to join this worldwide event. Or are you one of many who don’t play an
instrument or sing – but wish you had those skills? We invite
you to be part of a group of Goans who make a difference in Goa, by supporting
this event some other way. I’d like to tell you more.

About the event

The event is the first annual Musequality World Busk. It is open to all
musicians – amateur, professional, just starting to learn and whether
they play solo, with friends, in baroque groups, rock bands, whole orchestras,
opera companies ... any genre and any age. The world busk
runs from Monday, 8th June to Sunday, 14th June – the date you busk is up to
you. We are particularly encouraging young buskers to take
part on the Sunday (a school-free day!) when we hope also to set a record for
the largest co-ordinated busk the world has ever seen.

Our aim in Goa

We hope to raise funds for a new music-making project, for disadvantaged
children in Goa. Our aim is not to turn children into professional musicians
but to engage them in an activity that will give them the self-belief,
self-confidence and skills they need to turn their lives around.

The project director, Luis Dias, has recently moved back home to Goa, after
having lived in the UK where he was a general practice doctor. The project is
likely to be a string project, building on and reviving a long-standing string
tradition in Goa which is at risk of dying out. Luis plays the violin and will
teach in the project; he will also identify and work with elders in the
community who could pass on their musical knowledge – so the project will have
an impact on the wider community and on preserving traditional skills as well
as changing the lives of the children who get involved.

About Musequality

Musequality, a UK-based charity, funds communal music-making projects for
disadvantaged children in the developing world. We already support five
projects – two in Uganda, two in South Africa and one in northern Thailand –
and we are very keen to establish our sixth project in Goa. Our projects teach
children about team working, problem solving, decision making, compromise,
negotiation, discipline, ambition and the benefits of hard work – among many
other aspects that are essential in life.

Musequality was founded two years ago when professional violinist David Juritz,
leader of the London Mozart Players, went busking Round
the World and Bach, playing Bach for solo violin in 50 cities in 24 countries
on every continent except Antarctica. As we were launched
with a busk, we thought it would be fun to organise an annual fundraising
busking event for others to take part in.

Do join us!
You are invited to support this event in any way you can – taking part as a
musician, encouraging other musicians to take part or donating direct to the
project. We would very much welcome your involvement and do hope you will
accept our invitation.

We have set up a unique Justgiving donations page, specifically for our Goa
project. All proceeds from this page will go direct to our project in Goa.
The target amount is £5,000. We hope you will visit it and help us make a
difference: www.justgiving.com/goansformusequality

More information

    * About busking: everything you need to know to have a safe, hassle-free
busk, including tips and guidance for first time buskers, posters, stickers,
sponsorship forms and, for the especially keen, press releases to drum up
publicity:www.worldbusk.org <http://www.worldbusk.org>
    *

    * About the Musequality World Busk: all details including the
record-setting event at noon on Sunday, 14th June which must last at least 25
minutes so we are asking everyone to to start a little earlier than noon and
end a little later than 12.25. You can, of course, busk for as long as you
wish – the longer you busk, the more money you’ll raise:

    *

    * Where to busk: We recognise that some people in some countries might find
it hard to busk outside. They can busk anywhere and anyhow – in shopping
centres, offices, foyers before or after concerts, in schools – and they could
put on events and invite people to listen and donate or sponsor them ...
anything goes!
