President's Message

Mogal Goen-kara-no ani amigan,

It has been 3 long years since I have been able make the annual camp due work
commitments. Wow! I was exhausted, elated, rejuvenated and refreshed after 3
nights
and 4 days of laid back and times highly demanding lifestyle! Laid back because
I
did what most of us tried hard to do... almost nothing... but have a relaxing
and
enjoyable time. Highly demanding... because I had to make up the super clever
and
complex deals that each person had to conjure up after a devil's cut in "teen
patha".
Just ask some of the spouses of the highly stressed players making the "super
play"
of the century. To explain the foregoing terms would require the production of
a
special "dictionary"!

The camp was the breeding grounds for fertile ideas that put Australia's Kevin
Rudd's
2020 vision to shame. The hardly-working CDG members had their own version in
the
CDG 2050 Vision. To name just a few ideas, they came up with were "The UPGO
Passport" (Universal People of Goan Origin); The CDG membership scheme which
besides putting the Qantas and Virgin Blue's frequent flyer programs to shame -
will
be the next biggest thing since sliced bread and the credit card. In fact the
membership scheme will be in such great demand that we even have potential
wannabe's
like Paul McCartney and Elton John willing to give up their OBE's to join up.
If you
wish to receive exclusive "insider" information to these visionary ideas you
will
need to renew your membership for the next financial year. Details available in
the
enclosed membership form.

The usual campfire brought out a variety of guitarists, besides the old timer
Richard from Emerald - who drove only 10+ hours to get there - and anchored the
sing-song, there was Gautam who came up with wonderful 70's picnic classics
including the Cabelero with his "el-tel-morel" and surprise Danny who played
90's
"Save tonight" and "Time of your life". We still missed Joaquim and his hugely
versatile repertoire.

Our next "big" function will be the Red and Black dance which we will be
hosting for
the benefit for Caritas's work in Africa. We chose Africa as a lot of our early
members came from East Africa and still have connections there. It is also a
community effort to give to others who are less privileged than us.

We intend to have a sing-along for the June club day. Anyone can join in by
bringing
their instruments, equipment and voices. Free electricity will be provided to
make
the event electrifying! If this turns out the success we expect it to be, we
will
have a repeat performance for the World Goa Day in August. We also hope to have
a
Konklish skit to mark the event. If there is anyone interested in taking part,
please drop me a line or give me a call.

I have only received a minimal interest in the Goalympics for next year. Please
let
me know if you would support this event and also possibly host a family for the
4
days of the event.

With the next AGM around the corner, it is time to seriously consider providing
some
inside commitment by joining the committee. We hope to get a younger team on
board
with fresh ideas for the 20th anniversary.

Look forward to seeing all of you at the next CDG function.

Mog asundi
Louis

Annual Club Camp at North Pine! 1st - 4th May, 2009

Well, camp has come to an end for another year. I think we can say North Pine
proved
a nice campsite and to make the experience even better we had over 60 people
come
along for the ride! Campfire sing-alongs, badminton, volleyball, cricket,
swimming,
7-tiles, card games (Teen Patha proved popular!), karaoke, markets and the
museum
were enjoyed by all who attended. Not to forget the good old-fashioned chatting
that
filled the weekend. Hope to see everyone and more join us next year at Camp
Duckadang! Some members have shared their feedback on the camp below, enjoy!
Thanks
for coming! - Andrew Kingsley

Hi! My name is Samantha Sequeira and I live in the small town of Emerald,
Queensland, around 900km away from Brisbane. For many years my parents, my
sister
and I have attended the Goa Camp in Brisbane every May and this year was no
exception. Many ask us why we travel for 10 hours for just a three day camp but
to
us, and I'm sure to the others that attend, it is an incredibly worthwhile
experience. This year's camp took place at a lovely lakeside venue in Old
Petrie
Town. My family was the first to arrive, reaching the campsite at around 4pm on
Friday the 1st of May after we had been travelling since 3.30am that morning.
As
other families began arriving, we were reunited with people we hadn't seen
since the
last camp, a year ago. It was great to see the old familiar faces but what was
also
wonderful, was meeting new people. Over the course of the three days, friends
were
made as we played games during the day and stayed up talking and singing till
1am
every night. It was excellent that not only us kids got along but also the
adults,
as we watched them have a good time and entertain us with their antics. There
was
much to do at the campsite, playing badminton, visiting the Petrie museum,
swimming
in the pool, attending the Sunday markets and enjoying the huge bonfire on the
last
night. Although there were different groups that stuck together, the women
gossiping, the men playing cards, the uni guys entertaining the young ones, the
bonfire was a chance for us all to get together and celebrate the spirit of
being
Goan. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, as did the rest of my family. I made lots of
friends and I am looking forward to the next camp where we will hopefully meet
again. If only there were two camps a year!!

Samantha Sequeira

Thank you, Louis and his industrious team for arranging the Annual camp at
Petrie.
Yvonne, Leon, Melanie and myself enjoyed ourselves to the fullest. We enjoyed
the
relaxed casual atmosphere and bon fire sing-along. We also have to thank
Richard and
Anton for encouraging us to join in and to put up with our snoring. Looking
forward
to the next camp.

Regards, Mel

This was our first of many camps to come. We enjoyed it in our own way. It has
got
me geared up to learn new card games and place a homemade pickle on the table
at the
next camp. Ryan too enjoyed the change of scene and playing with Kieran, his
favourite was being able to stay up late and sleep in late without his parents
nagging him to do otherwise. He is raving about his experience of the campfire
(his
first) to his friends. For Mum, it was a treat a week in advance of Mother's
Day!
The ambience was so relaxing it was sad it came to an end, but the taste buds
were
quite homesick in the end.

My Camp Memories by Dwayne Monteiro

I have many memories of the Club De Goa camps I went to when I was young. I
remember
coming home from school on a Friday and behaving like a kid overdosed on red
cordial
during the long car ride to the camp site. I remember staying up late at night
playing spotlight with the other kids, learning new card games and eating
marshmallows toasted by the bonfire. I remember the canoe rides, touch football
games and the long, sleepy ride home. The CDG camp never failed to entertain.

This year it was four years since I last attended one of the camps. For the
past few
years the Labour Day long weekend was always crammed with high school
assignments,
Saturday sport and part-time work.

But that's not to say this Labour Day weekend wasn't exciting. My brother and I
were
counting down the days to the camp because both of us were not going along;
this
meant being able to do what we wanted to on the weekend without the constant
nagging
from the parents. I went to a few 18ths, sat an exam (not that thrilling) and
cruised to the beach, while my brother went out with his friends. The days were
busy
and chaotic (I barely got 4 hours sleep on Saturday) and in the blink of an eye
Monday afternoon had arrived, along with my parents.

How times have changed. Years ago I used to pencil in the camp dates into my
calendar because I looked forward to attend them - now I do it to remind myself
when
I have four days of freedom. Yet, as mum and dad filled us in on all the quirky
tales of Camp Warrawee, I began reminiscing about the days when my brother and
I
played table tennis and ate tons of snacks at camp.

So, will I be attending the 2010 Club De Goa camp at Duckadang? I'll have to
see
what life throws up.

********************

I just wanted to say thank you for such a wonderful break. I have not laughed
so
much in a long, long time. I guess I found my crazy side associating with all
the
crazy people out there. It was as much fun for me as it was for Jason, with the
monotonous life that we lead here in the Southside it was a change to get out
there
and have some fun.

Please convey my thanks to all those people who helped put this camp together
and
make it such an enjoyable weekend for Jason and myself.

Regards, Akila

Recipes!

Here are a couple of recipes from Brenda Monteiro!

Brenda's Imitation Dhokla

1 cup polenta
2 ½ cups water
2 tablespoons cooking oil
½ teaspoon ginger and garlic finely chopped
(optional)
¼ onion finely chopped (optional)
1 green chilli, finely chopped (optional)
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon cumin seeds

Heat the oil, add the mustard seeds, cumin. After the mustard seeds pop add the
optional items - chilli, ginger, garlic and onion and cook till the onion is
soft.
Then add the polenta and fry it for 5-10 minutes. Then add the water and salt
to
taste, constantly stir the mixture - as it will rapidly form bubbles. Keep
stirring
until the mixture thickens and moves to the centre of the saucepan. Turn off
and
remove from the heat. I quickly dip a glass serving dish in water and drain the
water off - leaving the dish wet. Turn over the polenta into the wet glass dish
and,
wet your hand and pat down the polenta, keep it aside for an hour or so to set.
Cut
into pieces and eat. Note: I use finely ground polenta - if the polenta grains
are
larger, add extra water

Brenda's Coconut Chutney

1 cup grated coconut
2 green chillies
½ cup plain yoghurt
2 teaspoons oil
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon urad dal
1 dried red chilli, broken in half
4-5 curry leaves

Grind the coconut and green chillies together. Mix in the yoghurt. Heat the
oil, add
the mustard seeds, urad dal, red chilli and curry leaves. When the mustard
seeds
start popping, pour the mixture over the chutney. Remember to remove the pan
from
the heat as soon as the mustard seeds start popping, or they will burn and
taste
bitter.

If you have a favourite recipe, send it to the Editor for publication in the
next
newsletter!

Goalympics 2010!

We are currently looking at the possibility of having another Goalympics
competition
between Club de Goa Brisbane, GOA NSW and GOA Victoria. It would be held on the
Easter long weekend in 2010 as this holiday is consistent with every state.
Before
we can progress with this idea, we will require feedback from you. Would you be
interested in competing? Would you be interested in letting a visitor from
another
state stay in your home over the weekend? Would you be interested in travelling
to
Sydney (if it were held there)? If you could send any feedback and/or ideas to
Andrew Kingsley at [email protected] that would be greatly appreciated.
