Goa on alert after Centre’s warning

PANAJI/VASCO:
The superintendent of police, Mr Atmaram Deshpande on Tuesday disclosed that
the Goa police have sounded general alert in the entire state as Goa has been
warned by central security agencies against possible infiltration of operatives
of Lashkar-e-Toiba and other terrorist orgnisations into three western India
states Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa through their coastline.
Mr Deshpande told the media persons that the alert has been sounded especially
along the coastline of the state and in this regard the Coast Guards and the
Navy have also been alerted.
The SP said the Goa police have been alerted by the central security agencies
that there was a possibility of infiltration of terrorists, especially LeT
operatives along the western India coastline from Gujarat to Goa.
He informed that the police have intensified patrolling. Verification of
crewmembers of fish trawlers and other visitors are going on as part of
security measures. The police are checking labourers particularly employed on
trawlers and especially hailing from states like Orissa and Kerala.
The Home Minister, Mr Ravi Naik held an important meeting with top police
officials and reviewed the security arrangements in the state and discussed
measures to be initiated in this regard.
As there are several important facilities like oil installations, Dabolim
airport, MPT in Mormugao taluka security agencies have tightened the
security in the taluka, especially in Vasco.
A senior police official in Vasco informed that the police are maintaining
round-the-clock vigil in Vasco. He said the police are keeping a strict watch
on the coastal belt of Khariwada, Baina, Vaddem, Bogmalo, Bimut, Velsao,
Cansaulim and others.
The patrolling has been intensified at oil installations in the city and at
Sancoale plateau, naval armament depot at Alto-Dabolim, at the GSL and Dabolim
airport.
The police have requested the people to inform the nearest police station or
can dial at 100 numbers in case they find any suspected materials or persons
roaming suspiciously in an around their locality.
