She brought in a new terrorist regime in which her government could send any citizen to jail at will without disclosing any reasons. The biggest casualty of Indira Gandhi's assault on democracy has been the sharp fall in the moral standards of everyday life in our country. She started enduring relationship with corruption. Everyone knows that she honored and exalted corruption that it became an integral part of the texture of our national life. In short she made unabashed corruption an authentic badge of Congress government-sponsored greatness in India. Mario adds: Didn't she also raise marginal income tax rates to the mid 90% range and capped executive salaries which led to an explosion in tax evasion and "black" money? However, we must also give the devil her due. In spite of all that Vinay is incensed about, Indira Gandhi eventually agreed to elections, which is almost unheard of for a dictator, and was ousted as a result. She could have continued the dictatorship. Thus India's committment to democracy re-asserted itself as soon as it was given the opportunity.
