The following letter was sent to Editor, Gomantak Times on 11-07-09. It was
re-sent on 16-07-09. But has not yet been published. It is appended here for
your information:
Sir,
Sub: Interring the truth
On reading his letter (Unearthing the truth, GT, 10/07), one would suspect that
Jose Salvador Fernandes does not understand English. But that is not possible,
since he is an M.A. with his entire scholastic career in the English medium.
The only other possibility is that he has taken leave of his senses. Here's
the evidence, from GT itself.
1. Tomazinho Cardozo wrote: I would not like to waste my precious time in
answering his (Borges) questions who is not any authority to decide the issue
(15/6). Yet, Fernandes says: Nowhere have I found that Tomazinho has shown
unwillingness to answer Borges' questions.
2. I wrote: (a) Let us have the debate by all means, but first let him answer
the questions (17/06). (b) The debate is no alternative to answering the
questions on GT itself; the proposed debate can cover many other points which
will have to be lined up beforehand, so as to avoid a pandemonium for which
politicians are famous (26/06). (c) In spite of my doubts about the efficacy
of the medium, I had agreed to debate with him; when the debate does occur, I
shall expect Cardozo to quote me verbatim from my writings, and not from his
own frayed memory; I shall expect him to use these to show where I have used
lies and manipulations, and what I have done to destroy Konkani in Roman
script; I shall demand hard verifiable facts, nothing less (02/07). After
all this, Fernandes insists that: Borges has not accepted Tomazinho's proposal;
it only infers that he is running away from the debate which can unearth the
truth.
3. Fr. Mousinho de Ataide said: Tomazinho referred to his spat with Uday
Bhembre; I was present at the History Hour …. (07/07). From that statement,
Fernandes concludes: Fr. Ataide attempts to create an impression that Tomazinho
dragged Uday Bhembre's name in this controversy.
4. Tomazinho (30/06) admits that he had an argument with Uday Bhembre, but
does not deny that he has failed to produce the proof that Bhembre demanded.
The subject of the spat is not relevant here, but the fact that Tomazinho is in
the habit of making wild accusations and consistently failing to provide the
evidence. Yet for Fernandes, Tomazinho's statement saying "the other lie that
he (Borges) has stated is that I accused Uday Bhembre for communal writings" is
sufficient defence!
Thus, here you have another of those clowns who can make statements - written
ones at that! - stand on their head, in their attempt to inter the truth; what
they will not do with oral ones is anybody's guess. With such champion
performers participating, the tamasha called 'debate' is bound to be a
super-hit comedy show. Does one need any further leads to guess the motive
behind their insistence on an oral 'debate'?
As to Walterbab Menezes (11/07), even if his grouses are true, his suggestion
is still stupid. If one is really interested in getting answers, the questions
must also be directed at the correct persons. However, if one just intends to
clown, well ....!

This may be a ruse of GT itself to help Tomazinho avoid the debate which he has
himself demanded INSTEAD OF the answers to the questions I had posed.
