There have been a few of write ups and letters in our dailies in respect of a
burial ground for Muslims in Salcete. The demand is for a dignified burial of
their dead. Let me put it this way, do we Goans have no right to live a
dignified life? Goans have been bred and lived for centuries peacefully,
dignified and in harmony with all communities, whereas their counterparts in
the rest of India have been bred in environment of violence, be it the World
war II, British rule or Partition of India.
Criminal elements have now crept in Goa. Our daughters cannot walk the cities
in a dignified respect without being eve teased; and when confronted, return
with a gang to assault with knives. Who were they when Margão saw riots and
bandh at the New Market last year? Why are there often riots at the masjid in
Margão? Is it because the migrant Muslims want to take over the mosque from the
Goan Muslims? Why were there riots at Sanvordem? Was it because of an illegal
mosque? Same as another was underway at S. Jose de Areal? Who are these in
undignified manner engaged in illegal & criminal activities; are they Goan
Muslims?
Goans are being pushed too far by the migrant population, be they market
vendors, builders, realtors or burglars. If they cannot let others live in a
dignified manner, I don’t see why they should demand to be buried in a
dignified manner on our Goan soil. If migrants want to stay in Goa, they should
blend with our culture and not set bad example to our younger generation. Goans
in general have been naïve. They tend to believe anything decorated
sympathetically which is detrimental to Goans as a whole. And please, if
someone wants to lecture me on this, claiming to be “follower of Christ”, my
advice is ‘Stop preaching and lead by example”
Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão.
