PANAJI: Government should devise a scheme to provide Goans with houses or
plots for residential purposes at affordable prices, Mapusa MLA Francis
 D'Souza said on Wednesday.

Stating that the rapidly mushrooming mega
projects<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/NEWS/City/Goa/Give-plots-houses-to-locals-at-affordable-rates-Mapusa-MLA/articleshow/4809315.cms#>are
not only making houses increasingly unaffordable for Goans but are
also
leading to fears in the minds of locals that the projects will lead to large
migrant inflow into villages, D'Souza said, "The way the projects are coming
up, villagers do not know whether their village sarpanch will be a Goan
tomorrow."

Further criticizing a recent statement by the chief minister that builders
should make houses available to locals at reasonable prices, D'Souza said,
"The builders a not here for charity. How can we ask builders who
invest<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/NEWS/City/Goa/Give-plots-houses-to-locals-at-affordable-rates-Mapusa-MLA/articleshow/4809315.cms#>crores
of rupees in their projects to provide locals houses at concessional
rates? The state government should ask its housing board to instead devise
such a scheme for locals."

He said further, "The way conversions are taking place, people will be left
with no land in their panchayats for locals. If the state government does
not devise a scheme soon to provide locals with plots or houses at reasonal
prices, it will have failed in its duties."
