The Souza Ferrao Birth Centenary Celebration was inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat on June 1, 2009 at the Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. At Panaji, the Speaker of the legislative assembly, Mr Pratapsing Rane was the Chief Guest. Addressing a large gathering of tiatr lovers, Mr Rane appreciated the initiative taken by Tiatr Academy of Goa for remembering the pioneers of Konkani Tiatr. He said that these artistes had to undergo a lot of sacrifices in order to preserve and promote Goan tiatr at that time. It is our duty to remember them and make the modern generation aware of their selfless contribution to the cause of tiatr. The president of the Tiatr Academy of Goa, Mr Tomazinho Cardozo, in agreement to the statement spoken by Mr Rane said it was very important to remember great artists like Souza Ferrao for their efforts and sacrifices towards their work. He also announced some schemes of the Tiatr Academy of Goa that aimed at promoting tiatrs in the villages, which would help in discovering theatrical talents in the villages. He also informed the gathering that the TAG will document the history of the 'tiatr' by publishing books and by producing audio and video CDs. Documentation will go a long way in making the future generation aware of the 'tiatr' and 'tiatr' artistes of yesteryears. The TAG will also give financial assistance to youth willing to learn music particularly to learn playing of wind instruments like the trumpet, saxophone, etc. Ivor D'Souza, chairman of the Souza Ferrao's Cultural and Charitable Trust, who was the guest of honour for the occasion, also spoke. Ms Vilma D'souza, treasurer of the trust presented a memento to the chief guest, Mr Rane. Mr Victor de Sa, member secretary of the TAG proposed a vote of thanks. The late Souza Ferrao was a great tiatrist. He produced 8 to 9 plays and composed hundreds of Konkani stage songs. He also penned a number of Goan folksongs. Besides a being a scriptwriter and lyricist he was a versatile actor. Unlike many of the 'tiatr' artistes, he was an excellent musician too. He was a multi-faceted artiste of the Goan 'tiatr' stage and was much loved the world over. He passed away in 1978. "Gouyo Put" the play written by him about 50 years back was staged on the occasion. It was directed by the well-known 'tiatr' artiste Anil Kumar. The play gives a beautiful message to all those who ill-treat mentally unsound children. It also stressed on the fact that these children can recover and live a normal life if people take a positive outlook towards. The late Souza Ferrao had tackled such socially driven issues 50 years ago when no body talked about it. This only goes to display the visionary that the late Souza Ferrao was. http://www.navhindtimes.in/buzz/1312-souza-ferrao-remebered
