The proposed salary hike for MLAs is a slap on the ‘aam admi’ and the proposed
State income tax on salaried persons a blow below the belt. The increase in
travelling expenses for MLAs is proposed to Rs 55,000 due to inflation in
travelling expense; but the government thinks this inflation does not affect
the common man. In fact all allowances to MLAs are enhanced citing inflation as
the reason, but the common salaried man faces the same inflation and over and
above the government crushes him by imposing tax. Is this government bothered
about the common man?
The common man has not only to face inflation but also this double tax.
Government health services and law implementation is also at its worst and the
common man has to rely on private doctors and lawyers. The professional tax on
them will automatically be compensated from the common man making him more
miserable.
The recent Supreme Court Judgement in the Jayalalitha case on statues clearly
made an observation therein, that the elected Government has to take decision
in public interest and not in self interest. Any decision taken by Legislature
in self interest at the expense of the public exchequer can be overruled by the
Court. The tax on the common salaried man and professionals is extortion of
money from the people as the coffers are empty; and in their personal interest
to amass wealth. Inflation affects the common man and not dishonest
politicians.

Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão.
