On 8Aug09, I saw a capsule on our police on BBC that made me ashamed to be an Indian ! Our own channels show us such happenings today. The world sees our police in various parts of India in gross human rights violations, encounters and killing of unarmed civilians. Police officers living in tents ,poor living conditions and wages, force ill equipped, poorly educated and trained. The main reasons given by those interviewed were Legal System slow, people want results, forcing police who are also under political pressure to take short cuts. The police force is a colonial remnant, with a 19th century Officials Secrets Act and mindset. In 2003 the Goa government under Chief Minister Parrikar, repealed the ineffective Public Men's Corporation Act 88, and introduced in the Legislative Assembly, the Goa Lok Ayukta Bill which was referred to a Select Committee. The Goa Police Reforms Bill( which includes the Lok Ayukta) is also hanging fire. We desperately need an aam admi police. Unless these Bills see the light of day,the people of India ( and specially Goa) plight can be likened to that of the abovementioned housemaid!
