----------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Goa Friends Video Volunteers will be hosting 130 people from around India for a Community Video Training Camp, at the Alor Grande Hotel from the 10th-15th of August. This will be the largest ever event about community video in India, and we hope you will join us for the *13th or 14th of August in Candolim, at the Alor Grande Resort.* What is community video, you may ask? Community video is media that is “made in, for and by communities,” and since 2006, Video Volunteers has trained over 100 community people — former diamond polishers, day laborers and rickshaw drivers among them — to make their own videos as a full-time, salaried job. These videos are screened in the center of the villages on movie screens on a monthly basis in more than 300 villages of India, and more than 200,000 have seen these films. Community video gives local people a voice to get out their own news and information, and transforms local people into community leaders. Most importantly, it empowers communities to take action, and more than 2000 have taken a stand on issues like water, education, human rights and gender equality after seeing one of these films. Video Volunteers was started several years ago, but we are new to Goa, having opened our office here in Baga only several months. So this event is also a launch party for Video Volunteers in Goa, and we would like to invite you to learn about our work, how you can get involved, and also give us your advice on how community media can strengthen the inspiring activism happening in Goa. There are two events you can attend: *Thursday, August 13th, 9:00am-5:30pm:* in the afternoon, there is a panel discussion on community media, and how it can strengthen social movements in Goa. Speakers will include Derek Almeida, Alito Sequeira, Gasper D’Souza, Norma Alvares (to be confirmed), Venita Coelho (to be confirmed) and Sebastien Rodrigues. The session will be started with a presentation by community producers about their work around India reporting on local issues and helping their neighbors access critical information. In addition to the panels, from 9am until 7pm there will be events running all day you can drop in, such as presentations on street theater, open source software, digiactivism, video blogging, community fiction films and presentations by community producers on what they have learned in their five days of training. Attending these training workshops as a spectator will be a great way to see firsthand how training in journalism is giving community members, many of whom have had very little education, into articulate and creative media-makers. *Friday, August 14th, 9:00am-5pm:* a one day conference on community media across India, with leaders speaking from the fields of internet activism, community radio and video. The conference will start with presentations by community producers about the impact of their work, and will touch upon issues such as how community video can integrate with the mainstream, where the movement is headed, and how we can grow from a few hundred people in India engaged in community media, to tens of thousands. The doors are open for all Goans to attend — whether students, teachers, activists, business people or simply active and curious individuals. You don’t need to be a filmmaker or media person to come! There is no charge for attending, and we would be honored to meet you and share our work with you. *Directions *— Please come to the *Alor Grande Hotel in Candolim* located opposite Health Center, near Dona Alcina Hotel.
