Centre okays Rs 32 lakh to overseas job agency

The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, Government of India has sanctioned a
sum of
Rs 32 lakh to Goa's Overseas Employment Agency for implementation of skill
upgradation and pre-departure orientation programmes.
"Our Overseas Employment Agency conducts skill upgradation courses for which
the
Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, Government of India has sanctioned a sum
of Rs
32 lakh," NRIs Commissioner Eduardo Faleiro said while addressing a press
conference.
"The trainees are instructed on latest techniques, safety procedures and use of
correct and latest tools. They are also instructed on passport, visa, ticketing
and
travel/emigration procedures," he said.
He said the Overseas Employment Agency, which is headed by Vice Admiral John de
Silva as chairman and U D Kamat as the managing director, has so far conducted

such training programmes.
"Besides, two twelve-week programmes for high school dropouts were conducted in
the
trade of refrigeration and air conditioning, mechanics and mobile phone repairs
in
association with government ITIs, Agnel Ashram and Don Bosco Technical
Institute,"
Faleiro said adding "We shall now also involve institutions like the All India
Women
Conference and the Goa Panchayat Mahila Shakti Abhiyan and the Mushtifund
Technical
Institute."
These courses, he said, will impart training to women so as to upgrade their
skills
in various trades such as cutting, tailoring, beautician, home nursing, fashion
designing, screen printing, computer applications, etc. so as to make them self
reliant.
Some of these training programmes are expected to commence in the course of
this
month, he said.
Continuing further, Faleiro said, that the hospitality sector is a key area
where
Goa can maximise labour mobility in association with countries of the European
Union.
"Hence we decided to initiate a pilot project for training and placement of 100
workers in the hospitality sector in the European Union. This project will be
held
in association with the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs and Government of
India," he said.
The tripartite meeting involving the chairman and managing director of our
Overseas
Employment Agency, the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs and City and Guilds
will
be held shortly, Faleiro stated. City and Guilds, a leading examining and
accreditation body in the United Kingdom for vocational and managerial
training,
will provide the required training modules and certify the trainees to
facilitate
their employment in the European countries, he said.
