100 Goans to be trained for jobs in EU hospitality sector, says Eduardo

PANAJI: The Commissioner for NRI Affairs, Mr Eduardo Faleiro on Wednesday
informed
that the Commissionerate of NRI Affairs, in collaboration with the ministry of
overseas Indian affairs and City & Guilds would be undertaking a pilot project
for
training and placement of 100 Goan workers in hospitality sector in the
European
Union.
Addressing a press conference at the Maquinez Palace auditorium, the
Commissioner
for NRI Affairs said the hospitality sector is a key area where Goa can
maximise
labour mobility in association with countries of the EU.
"The pilot project would be conducted in Goa," he said, informing that City &
Guild,
a leading examining and accreditation body in the UK for vocational and
managerial
training will provide the required training modules and certify the trainees to
facilitate their employment in the European countries.
Mr Faleiro also said the Overseas Employment Agency of the Commissionerate of
NRI
Affairs, which conducts skill upgradation courses, has till date, in such 21
courses
trained 261 trainees, with all 100 per cent trainees employed. "Around 10 to 15
per
cent of these trainees are recruited in foreign countries," he added.
The trainees undergoing these courses are instructed on latest techniques,
safety
procedures and use of correct and latest tools. They are also instructed on
passport, visa, ticketing and travel/ emigration procedures. The ministry of
overseas Indian affairs has sanctioned a sum of Rs 32 lakh to the Overseas
Employment Agency for implementation of this skill upgradation and
pre-departure
orientation programmes.
The Agency has also conducted two 12-week programmes for high school dropouts
in the
trades of refrigeration and air-conditioning, mechanics and mobile phone
repairs.
Furthermore, the Agency will now undertake courses for women in trades like
cutting,
tailoring, beautician, home nursing, fashion designing, screen painting,
computer
applications and so on so as to make them self-reliant.
Speaking further, the Commissioner of NRI Affairs said the Commissionerate has
formulated a scheme called 'Goa Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children'.
"The
scholarship will be available every year to four students of Goan origin, two
each
from the NRI (Indian citizens) and PIO (foreign citizens of Indian origin)
categories," he informed, pointing out that in case of non-availability of
suitable
candidates in either category, the unfilled slots will be offered to students
of the
other category.
"Under this programme, the scholarship amount will cover tuition fee, admission
fee
and post-admission services, subject to a maximum of Rs 40,000 per year, per
student," he added.
Mr Faleiro said till date only one Goan, working outside India and having lost
his
job presumably for being infected with the H1N1 swine flu, has approached the
Commissionerate of NR Affairs.
Informing that the particular person was working in Dubai, the Commissioner for
NRI
Affairs, Mr Faleiro said, "However, we have to confirm the reason for his
termination from the job." He maintained that the NRGs would be informed not to
overreact and get panicky due to the worldwide spread of the illness.
The director of higher education has been designated as the nodal officer for
implementation of this scholarship programme, and the applicants would need to
appear for a written examination on October 12, 2009. The details are available

Meanwhile, the second Know Goa Programme will be held from November 30 to
December
14, 2009 in Goa and New Delhi. The programme is intended for youth of Goan
origin
who are not Indian nationals, and who have distinguished themselves in a
particular
field as professionals or students, and have an abiding interest in India.
