I have heard that phrase - but what does one mean by that? Let me ask further by way of example - The following poses a dilemma for everybody concerned. A mentally competent pregnant woman - in labour- has been diagnosed with placenta previa. (The placenta is in the way of the birth canal). Her doctors tell her she MUST have a Cesarean Section OR her "viable" fetus has a 100% chance of death, and she herself has a 50% chance of death. She says NO. I do NOT want to have a Cesarean section. I refuse to give you consent for such a procedure on me. Let us say is Chicago: The legal standard is Mother has the right to decide. A Catholic doctor says: The medical standard is ...Do the best for your patient The activist ultra-right Catholic priest says: As the fetus is VIABLE, the State has a right to preserve the unborn fetus (and interestingly enough, quotes Rowe v Wade) How does Mario wish the doctor to practice his medicine? Legal Standard or Medical Standard? jc
