Contact: [email protected] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Showcasing Goan Culture to the Nation By CHRISTINA VIEGAS Friday, 11 September 2009 01:24 The beauty of Goa lies it its unique elements that make it stand out as the sunny paradise everyone wants a slice of. Prominent among many such elements are the music and dance of the state. Its unique cultural heritage is incorporated in the many traditional folk festivals and performances. These folk music and dances have continued uninterruptedly, while the influence of the Portuguese music and dance on the local culture has helped evolve new forms. This delightful blend and co-existence of cultural traditions gives a unique character to the music and folk dances of Goa. To promote Goan culture at the national level, the Department of Art and Culture has decided to form groups of folk dance and music artists. An audition for the same will be held by the end of the month. Presently, entry forms for participation are being given out by the Department. And what is the motive behind recruiting these folk dance troupes? Mr Cezar D' Mello, assistant cultural officer, Department of Art and Culture informs, "This is an endeavour to promote Goan culture across the nation. These groups will have a platform to perform out of state and will get an opportunity for cultural exchange." But are people from the rest of the country aware of the true Goan culture? Or do they have a distorted version as portrayed by the Hindi films? The gentleman enlightens, "People all over are quite aware that Goa is much more than what is obvious. They know that Goa has a history of rich tradition. We have a unique blend of Indian and Western culture which appeals to people all over. This is seen in our music and dances too which are very lively with fast beats. This is what people look for in Goan songs and dances." How will the groups be chosen? Mr D' Mello says, "They will be expected to perform four different folk dances with folk music and in folk costumes. We will be choosing three groups. Each will comprise of 15 members. And can be a mix of genders." The groups chosen will be the lucky troupes who get to perform for one or two years at a stretch, at various festivals all over the country. With Goan folk dances bearing a tradition of thousands of years, where the performers portray the lifestyles, cultures and aspirations of different strata, religions and castes of Goan society, we are assured that our performers will take our culture to the various corners of the country. http://www.navhindtimes.in/buzz/2930-showcasing-goan-culture-to-the-nation
