Cancer in Goa -Wading through the controversies

I thank all who participated in this thread and gave us their views. Given the
wide geographic distribution of Goanetters and their varied professions, the
perspectives have been divergent - naturally.  On the surface the writings
appear controversial, yet  from the authors view they are accurate.  So I
would like to tie up these perspectives to help Goa and Goans address Cancer.

I am not here to address individual cases and treatments.  To get to the
specifics, here are pointers that I think are needed to address Cancer in Goa.
Some of these may exist in Goa. If so, their activity has to be better
publicized.

For starters -
NO  MONEY  NEEDED - as the information and knowledge is widely available.
MUCH VOLUNTEER PARTICIPATION IS NEEDED.

NEEDS:
1. A vibrant Goa Cancer Society of lay persons and medical profession.
2. A Cancer Awareness Month - preferable a low festival activity month between
October to March (outside the monsoon, summer, vacation months)
3. During the Cancer Awareness month, the lay people and the medical
establishment, with the help of free media, will be informed about cancer
prevention, screening, early detection, and signs and symptoms of cancer. This
would include messages to stop smoking and tobacco-chewing; and participate in
screening programs from the patients' own doctor.  The cancer check-ups would
include exam of the mouth and throat, breast, uterine and prostate cancer.
4. If the above goes well the next step would be "cancer detection camps" where
colon-rectal screenings would be undertaken, preferably with the help of
volunteer gastro-enterologists.

Any feed-back is welcome
Regards, GL
