Contact: [email protected] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Goanet] Coconut-related Konkani terms -2 Thanks Borges, About Toddy taping: Although the Shaving is done three time a day only two times involves toddy collection and one time i.e. the middle time at noon is called ‘show’ or shaving . Morning and late evening one may say ‘Madd kaddunk’ gela but at noon it is Show-ak gela TT also uses/carries something called ‘gope’ sort of a coiled string/rings to tighten the ‘poi’ tip where is shaved three times a day. Gope were again a product of coconut piddo/chuddit (Avo) Also, Moddop, pochok, fenni and goddo are the products or by-products of Sur (Toddy) About coconut Plucking (Paddunk) The sort of 4 or 5 sided metal sharp hammer, which was to mark or emboss the trunk of the coconut tree (by striking on it) to indicate number of Penddi or Manzorio ready for next ‘paddo’. It's like writing on the tree itself. The person who did this job was called ‘olEr’ (as is Aguad ‘foler’ except there is no f). Sadly, this practice is now discontinued may be it is treated as ‘unnecessary’. At school time, I had a friend whose father was a ‘Oler’, I wonder anybody remembers something called ’Addkapttem’ My dad used to make one and give me to play. It was made from raw/matured ‘Piddo’ (Stalk). Fore portion of piddo was cut or discarded and again the major portion of the end part keeping the stocky part say about a meter in size. It was then vertically bisected or cut from the front/top so as to make two or three loose flaps. Hold it on one side/handle by both hands an shake up & down and it gave loud flapping sound.. Very easy to make ‘Addkapttem’. Another product was ‘Kottumbem’ (not the same as Kottumbo see pic) Kottumbem or Kottbem is made from the Coconut stem or trunk (Korvo) say about a meter or more in length. The trunk was carved/emptied from inside so as to look like a large cement pipe with top opening. The pig feed (Hann) in thick liquid form was poured in it and she then call the pigs ‘yo, yo yo ghe-e yo’. Recognizing their master’s voice, the pigs used to come running for their dinner or lunch. Kottumbem is nothing but a feeder to feed pigs. Up to 5 pigs eat from there same time. When fighting (neigbours quarrels) . I heard one calling another (usually female to male or male to male ) ‘dukor mure tum kottbiam hann hat tesolo’ (You are pig who eats in Kottbem) This is our Kottumbo (not the same as kottbem but whatever liquid collected underneath the pot or Bhurkulo goes to pigs anyway) http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/3879313034/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/3879311962/ Following are some of the exclusive pics from JoeGoaUk collectiom Product of coconut Tree Sarun etc http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/2316968784/ Poi, Dambbem piddo etc http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk5/2404316084/ Nal, addsoram, shoukam, chuddtam etc http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk21/3795249587/ young coconut tree http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk18/3434683971/ Madd, Render, dudnnem etc http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/2381211012/sizes/l/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/2380375785/sizes/l/ doulo/Chip http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/2188436248/ Paddekar, koito, rope-ring, manzor/Penddi etc http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/2381209586/sizes/l/ several hundred years old ‘nal’ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk18/3442685228/ coconut tree with at least 6 manzorio or penddi http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk20/3727695780/sizes/l/ Molam in the background http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/2381220754/ Anxe and Anxe making http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/2381219424/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/2380382179/ Mollam, sampidde making etc http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/2381217236/sizes/l/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/2381216326/sizes/l/ Bhatti or distillery http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/2381213774/sizes/l/ Coconut husking tool ‘Kumddo’ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/84940647/ It gives me a great privilege to announce that my great grand father was a professional coconut husker .
