In Goa there are celebrations galore. Let me start with a christening
ceremony followed by a lunch or dinner. Then there are special birthdays
like the 1st, 16th, 21st, 50th, 60th,70th, 75th, and in between there are
the usual annual birthdays which need to be attended to .The First Holy
Communion, the Confirmation ceremony followed by the usual feasting not no
mention weddings practically almost every weekend affairs. Wedding
anniversaries like 10th, 20th, Silver Wedding Anniv. Golden Wedd. Anniv. .
Funerals have to be attended to followed by the 10th day Mass, months mind,
First Death Anniv. and so on.
One can imagine the plight of a Goan worker in Goa. He has to faithfully
fulfil all the social obligations by attending the social events of his
many friends , relatives and neighbours, for which he has to ask for leave of
absence and more often than not unpaid leave from his place of work.
A Goan catholic worker in Mumbai, Gulf, and on board of ships has no such
social obligations to be performed during the working hours. Is it any
wonder he is so much more efficient away from Goa than in his own
homeland ?
