VJP,

This is a relatively recent article by Hon. Soli Sorabjee, the former
Attorney General of India, written a little more than a month ago.

Please forward to Goanet if you see fit.

Apart from Soli's critical viewpoints on Indian political scene, it mentions
the passing of Goan musician Anto Menezes, vibraphonist (vibraphone = a
souped up version of a xylophone with a bigger sound) from Kolkata. It
concludes with some nice positive comments by Soli on my work.

FYI Anto's cousin, the late Tony Menezes was my piano teacher in my
formative years in Kolkata. Anto was a very crucial part of the Kolkata jazz
scene: both as a pianist and as a vibraphonist. Anto's brother Mosin Menezes
is a jazz pianist currently living in Delhi.

Funnily enough another relative of Anto (I think cousin, or may even be a
brother, but much younger), Morris Menezes was my calculus teacher in the
11th standard at St.James School, Kolkata. The interesting thing about
Morris Menezes was that he did not mind me bunking / cutting classes during
school hours to go to his house on the school campus where he would put on
for our listening pleasure classic jazz recordings from the 1950s and early
60s, and I can still remember some of the recordings to this date: Art
Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, "Moanin' " (with Bobby Timmons on piano),
Cannonball Adderley performing "Dis Hyeah" ("This Here"), early recording on
the Impulse label of pianist McCoy Tyner playing a trio version of "Autumn
Leaves" .....and at that time in India CDs did not exist, and none of this
stuff was available on vinyl in any the local record stores (If one was
lucky one may run into something at some second hand bin in Free School
Street).

Here is Soli Sorabjee's article:
