To understand better the ratio of Christian vs Hindu population of Goa, one has to take certain facts into consideration as follows:
1510 - 1780 During this period Goa comprised of only 3 talukas i.e. Ilhas, Salcete and Bardez and one can safely assume that 90 to 95% population of this region was Christian. 1780 - 1880 When Pernem, Bicholim, Satari, Ponda, Sanguem, Quepem and Canacona talukas were added to the original Goa of 3 talukas Christians had slight advantage over over Hindu population. 1880 - 1945 Christians started to emigrate en masse initially from Bardez taluka and from 1920 onwards from Salcete taluka. The percentage of Christians dropped and Hindus enjoyed a slight majority status. 1945 - 1961 Further emigration by Christians to Bombay and other parts of the world made Hindus a great majority.in Goa. 1961 - Chrisian population declines further and today perhaps it is 25 to 30 % of the total Goa population
