Actually if FN had disclosed the context of the
Khandi he required, it would have been much better
as some one has replied that it is the khandi measurement of 'seed' required
for each field.

The former weights and measures:
(now Metric: Kilo/Litre)

1 Khandi = 20 man(moN)
1 moN = 4 dora, doDe (singular 1 doDo)
1 doDo = the lb varied for different products
Similarly, the lb per moN differed as per product:
1 moN of kopra = 32lb, 1 mon of sugar 26lb,
1 moN of Onion, garlic, iron = 24lb

Weight for solids:
1 Khumbo = 20 Khandi
1 Khandi = 20 Kuros
1 Kuro = 2 pailis
1 Paili = 4 Poddis
1 Poddi = 2 ordi(half) Poddis
1 ordipoddi(solguem, natti) = 2 ordenattis
1 ordnatti = 2 guirnatis
1 Guirnati = 2 solahos
1 Solaho or Solavem = 2 bothisavos or Bothisolavem
(In Konkani, botthis is 32 like: thees(30), ekthees(31), bothis(32),
thettis(33), chouthis(34), pantis (35) and 39 will be ekuNchaLis!!! then
comes 40 (chaLis)

Weights for liquids:

1 Xero = 12.4/5 oz
Ordoxero = 62/5 oz
Pacxero = 301/3 oz
Navtango = 13/5 oz (does any one remember 'navtang' this is exclusively
related to liquor measure?
Orde-navtang = 4/5oz

OTHER:
Pavonxeri (pauxer?) = 4 Ratto
1 Ratto = 1lb
Pavonratto = 3/4 lb
Ordo Ratto = 1/2 lb
Pavratto = 1/4 lb

Above info: COURTESY: Book: An Historical and Archeological Sketch of the
City of Goa by Jose Necolau da Fonseca

Conversion:
1 Khandi = 220.32 kg
1 kg = 2.2lb
1 kg=35.3 oz

I am more interested in Gabe's posting on 'pensos'

Because, I have heard many willed their
property to Jesuits, may be later to churches or individuals on condition
that they offer mass to the
donor's soul after the donor passed away?

Curiously,
MD
