SHRIKANT BARVE <shri8131 at yahoo.com> : Modern medical profession was in alliance with modern pharmaceutical industry and as such was becoming a 'profit-driven' profession. Mahatma Gandhi in his book Hind Swaraj published in
Comment: 1: Gandhi was not a medical professional. Accordingly his view on this profession cannot NOT be accepted as an expert view. 2: What was "modern medicine' in 1908 could be classified as ancient medicine or even quackery in 2009. Such have been the advances of modern medicine even in the past 5 years. 3: Did Gandhi write about his own profession i.e. Law? 4: I can reasonably assume that No Young Person in India is practising Gandhi's prescribed method of sex i.e. Don't Do It. jc From Hind Swaraj of M. Gandhi http://tinyurl.com/y9rtk5p http://books.google.co.in/books?id=oc47gUOPZfcC&pg=PR29&dq=hind+swaraj+1908&ei=hMjzSv7TI42szgSz69CZBg&client=firefox-a#v=snippet&q=lawyer%20&f=false 110. In 1938, addressing the Bar Association in Peshawar, M. Gandhi reminded his audience about his `peculier views' about lawyers and doctors which he had recorded in HS. A true lwyer, he told them, was one who placed truth and service in the first place and the emoluments of the profession in the next place only. Lawyer's profession is a profession which cannot but result in the encouragement of quarrels.' I realized that the true function of a lawyer was to unite parties riven asunder. The lesson was so indelibly burnt into me that a large part of my time during the twenty years of my practice as a lawyer was occupies in bringing about private compromises of hundreds of cases. I lost nothing thereby – not even money, certainly not my soul. ----------------------------------- 111. The introduction of the modern notion of rights-based modern law exacerbated Hindu-Muslim relations. 112. Gandhi's most severe criticism of the modern legal system is that it had become handmade of colonial rule. ============================================= It is worth considering why we take up the profession of medicine. It is certainly not taken up for the purpose of serving humanity. We become doctors so that we may obtain honours and riches. ================================================ "Modern medicine is driven by profit motive" plainly accept it. Why say 'practice then may be quackery now'. =============================================== M. Gandhi was his own soul driven being.. He was not advising what people want. He was just advising what he feels 'heetache : best to all, now and in future' at that point of time. "We do it because people want it", "Lokanchi kama karapi leader amaka jai" we are electing these type of people.
