Nascy is not wrong, considering the social mores of the time he is talking about. Social advancement is a process that is coaxial to progress around. In a manner of saying, for instance, my family has a long ways to go but that does not mean they are not advanced socially in certain ways.
Nascy is not saying that Goans were better in general, but to my mind alluding to a better relationship with reality as a means to better ones ends -- survival at that point in time; the rewards to those who could grasp them in toto turned huge and they enjoy them to this day. So this "bias," is one that cannot be put in the same league with sexual hangups (clarify? ), although it may be presented as a most logical and worthy extrapolation. Feel free anyone, to start rolling the ball on sexual hangups, but not on the back of "social advanced," and I will contribute. But please know your stuff and have some solid thoughts. Hey, talk about yourselves. Also start looking at despondency which leads people to indulge in all manners of irritating and crass behavior. Epistemolgy is something we must understand a little better. venantius j pinto > Date: Thu, 12 Nov 2009 13:06:50 +0530 > From: Frederick Noronha <[email protected]> > To: "Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994!" > <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: [Goanet] Veteran's Day: Goans who laid down their lives > > > Nascy, the rest of your post was very interesting... but I thought the > statement below came with some inbuilt bias. > > 2009/11/12 Nascy Caldeira <[email protected]>: > > > Christian Goans were socially advanced, in that they > > had no taboos and other superstitions about eating > > or handling food that the British and westerners ate; > > and that is the reason they were employed in > > large numbers on variuos Ships at the time, and > > EVEN NOW. > > We could always see situations we like and claim that these are > indicators of being "socially advanced" (whatever such a construct > means). > > Could we point to the Christian Goan hang-ups over sexuality, their > tendency to get involved in intense litigation or their weekly > attendance of Sunday mass as a sign fo being "socially advanced"? > > >
