Personally I could not care less whether someone calls me a Goemkar, Goes,
Goan,Goanese
or plain Goigoi.
It is apparent that mostly Goans who are settled in India do not like the
term Goanese,for it
does not differentiate literate Goans from labouring class of Goans. I was
wondering if such
class distinction is found in the petro dollar rich region of the Gulf. Only
Selma could tell,
after all she spent her teenage years there. Just thinking, is the term
Gulfee applied only
to the labouring class of Goans in the Gulf ?
Please do not be offended by the term Goigoi. Goi means Government of India
but it also
means a sacred cow. I mean Gai but is also pronounced as Goi. Not only our
holy
saraswat brahmins like Ribeiros and Figueiredos but also many ordinary Goans
have a
penchant to convert vowel ''a'' to ''o ''like Bombaim/Bombay was Bomboi for
Goans in the
past.
