Samir,
There are only a few people who understand the lengths that Canadian based
mining companies will go to, to secure deposits and open mines. The Toronto
Star has been carrying a series of articles this week that highlight the abuses
of the Canadian based companies. For those interested, take a look at today's
article. The Argentine Mines Minister gives her story of what Canadian
gold miner Barrick did in Argentina which eventually forced her to resign while
her former colleagues went on to become Barrick employees. Here is the link.

On the other hand, a Canadian MP is trying to introduce a law that will force
Canadian companies operating outside Canada to act in a more ethical manner.

At the Goan Convention in Toronto last year, Dean D'cruz gave a detailed
presentation on how the present day mining activities in Goa will cut the flow
of ground water and dry out the water table and wells near the coast. The time
frame involved is a short one. Ground water forms at the higher elevations and
moves slowly to the coast. This natural flow is being cut off by the
miners. All the new apartments blocks in Goa are also taping into the ground
water for their swimming pools and drinking water, putting extreme pressure on
the water table. I guess most people in Goa know this but no one seems
concerned.
