*Barcem locals want govt to reject firm’s mining lease * ** *HERALD REPORTER * *Barcem locals want govt to reject firm’s mining lease * *HERALD REPORTER * *MARGAO, NOV 27 * ** *Villagers of Barcem under the banner of Barcem Nagrik Samiti* on Friday called on the South Goa District Collector, G P Naik and conveyed their strong opposition to the proposed mining activities in the village.
The villagers demanded that the government reject the mining lease sought by a mining company to commence mining operations, saying the economy of the village is primarily dependent on agriculture. “Barcem village has a hilly topography. The cashew plantation is around 85 per cent while paddy is about 10 per cent. Cashew production turnover is around Rs 50 lakh per year”, the villagers pointed out. Saying that the village has around six natural springs, seven ponds, five wells, two main streams and other drainage system, which fulfills the livelihood of the villagers, the Samiti said that Quedem has 550 population, consisting of 95 per cent of Velip community. “They eke their livelihood on agriculture”, the memorandum submitted to the district collector stated adding that granting of mining lease will endanger the very existence of the village. The District Collector told Herald that the villagers has demanded that the government reject the application for the mining leases and promised to forward the representation to the higher-ups for necessary action saying that permissions for mining activities are only granted by the Department of Mines. A local resident, Kushali Velip said the village youths have no jobs and are dependent on agriculture to earn their livelihood.
